Austin-based songwriter, producer, graphic designer Karen Chisholm likes to describe her music as friendly, with pop sensibilities. But her genre-blurring tunes range from addictive pop to dark, sensual blues, rhythmic rock, soaring ballads and even a sweet little ditty here and there. In 2011 alone, she has written for several films — including an animated short honored as a finalist in the 2011 Hollywood Feel Good Film Festival — and two placements in an iPhone app. Her engaging vocals (think bits of Sheryl Crow, Dido, Feist and Aimee Mann), haunting melodies, cinematic sound and imagery and direct lyrics have a way of permeating listeners’ hearts and minds, winning her new fans on a daily basis.
Though she has written songs all her life, Chisholm has pursued music as a career only since 2008. But she’s been busy: In 2010 she released a video and a 12-song CD on which she collaborated with four producers, and in 2011 she released two music videos. 2012 will bring six new song-producer collaborations and two more videos, as well as several publishing projects.
