LOGLINE: “A young man triumphs over the spiritual vacuum his life has become, finds solace in his higher power and realizes his and his father’s dream.”

SYNOPSIS:

In the same spirit of great films such as “Rocky,” “Chariots of Fire,” the driving force behind “True Glory” is man versus himself in redemption of the human soul. Based on a true story, “True Glory” centers on the Oldest Continuing Sporting Event in North America, the Royal Annual St. John’s Regatta. In 1901 the Outer Cove rowing team set a course record of 9:13:80, which became the oldest sporting record in North America and possibly even the world. In 1981, a rowing team under the sponsorship of Smith Stockley and Skippered (Coached/Coxswained) by James “Skipper” Ring broke the eighty year old record with a time of 9:12:04. The eighty year old record of 9:13 had acquired an almost mythical status in Newfoundland and Labrador and particularly in St. John’s, one of the oldest cities in North America. The myth was such that many people doubted it had ever been set, while many more doubted it would ever be broken. Generations of men and women were born and raised, but the 9:13 still stood the test of time. The record had become a symbol of excellence and endurance in North American sporting history. Randy is seven years old when he first learns from his father, Skipper, the story of the Outer Cove rowing team and the setting of the 9:13 record. Skipper tells Randy throughout his childhood that they will some day break the record, though no one had yet come close. Many trials and tribulations throughout this young man’s life get in his way, and his battles with school, alcoholism and fighting have taken over his life. In spite of all these obstacles, the idea of breaking the record still sits in the back of his mind. With help and encouragement from his family and friends, Randy eventually takes control of his problems and begins, along with his father and brother, to build a championship team. It would take five years of training and many miracles to break the eighty year old record. “True Glory” is about the incredible journey of a father and son’s dream, a story of the human condition in which one man’s passion, inspired by the ideas of his father, help him to regain control of his life.
