SYNOPSIS:
Dr Olivia O’Neill, a biological conservationist has been working on making the goal of wolf rehabilitation a reality by homing in on the area that best fulfils a specific criteria. Sullivan County, a remote, sparsely populated centre, ticks all the boxes. There’s just one tiny problem – she thought she could get away without consulting the locals because she’d put an extra ten miles on the recommended distance from population centre. The administrative centre of Sullivan County is Eden, home to a group of Anabaptists whose founding fathers came over with the first wave of displaced Puritans. Jamesonites shun all modern life and follow only the teachings in the Old Testament. As far as Olivia’s concerned, her plan’s a shoo-in. She did not count on Mother Nature giving her a major headache, in more ways than one. The Elect, led by the dominant Daniel Jamieson, a direct descendant of the man who gave the community its name, vote out her plan despite a passionate speech from Olivia. Bowed but not defeated She plans on leaving; getting some more data together to sway them but her exit is swiftly halted by a fall of snow from the mountains that form the pass. Olivia is trapped in Eden until the spring thaw. She finds friendship with Elisheba Jamieson, Daniel’s sixty something sister and Sarah Denton who, though born in the valley is considered an outsider because her family only moved to Eden in the early twentieth century. Together these two women help Olivia settle into her temporary life until the spring thaw. Olivia is shocked to discover, that Elisheba is, potentially, a wealthy woman in her own right thanks to the will of her great-grandfather, Hezekiah, who had broken faith with the community and bought the mountains surrounding the community. Here he stayed, his hatred of his near-neighbours, growing. Olivia makes the most of her time. Her friendship with Elisheba strengthens and she comes to appreciate their way of life but that all changes when a local man, Joshua, is brought to the Meeting House with terrible injuries. It is clear to Olivia that he has been bitten by a large predator. This turn of events leads Olivia to a terrifying revelation. The wolves, believed to be extinct, still roam the mountains, hidden in plain sight and they have rabies. It transpires that Hezekiah’s will contains a malicious clause; when the last wolf dies out, the mountains can be sold to the highest bidder. The future is looking bleak for Eden. Olivia finds herself using all her knowledge of wolves in a race against time to save the animals and a community on the brink of having its way of life irrevocably changed.
