As the eldest son of a multigenerational-preaching family, I was supposed to take over my father’s pulpit. Instead, I ran west. I knew in order to write I needed to live in wild places, meet people unlike anyone I knew in the small town where I grew up. So I bounced from northern California to Kentucky, from Wyoming to New Mexico. All the while, I jotted words. Sometimes I used a yellow legal pad, sometimes the blank parts of day-old newspaper, in better times a MacBook Pro with enough processing power to bring down the global economy.
I washed pots and pans. I poured drinks. I wrote movies. I worked in television news. For fifteen years I scribbled in notebooks while hiding from God.
I use the skills I’ve honed over fifteen years of writing screenplays, news copy, books, and television pilots to find the story hidden inside people’s work history. Today I write personal and professional bios, ghostwrite memoirs and biographies, and develop short videos that convey the mission behind organizations and companies.
