DENTS
By Dennis Doud

GENRE: Family
LOGLINE:

It's Max Headroom meets Balaam's donkey when the wounded heart of a teenage girl grows bitter towards God, who uses an asteroid, a broken computer tablet, and a strange old car to help her believe again.

SYNOPSIS:

Jenny Benson is mad at God. Her mom got sick. Her dad lost his job. Mom dies. Dad loses everything. Jenny, brother Sammy, and her dad, Bill Benson, start over in a small rural town. Jenny's viewpoint: “We moved to a house no one wants in a town where no one wants to live.”

Jenny asks God for two things. Give her a car. Bring her mom back. God’s answer is the intergalactic targeting of asteroid-infested hail to transform the birthday gift of a beat-up old car into a vehicle of visitation for an angel named "Dents".

Sammy is the first to meet Dents via the car’s radio. Through the miraculous use of a broken PC tablet and LOTS of glue, Dents is transformed from an audio voice to an audiovisual presence.

Dents coaxes Sammy and Jenny into a deeper trust in God. Sammy readily believes but Jenny’s heart is hard. Yet the gently prodding, quirky friendship of Dents begins to melt away Jenny’s defenses. Dents even helps the town’s rough-around-the-edges mechanic, Gertie, realize that God has always loved her.

Life is good and getting better.

Until one Sunday afternoon.

Jenny is home alone. A knock on the door heralds the Sheriff's Deputy with bad news. Bill and Sammy have been in an auto accident. Jenny's faith hits a crossroads and even help from Gertie and Dents can't keep her from falling back into the hardness she knew before.

Jenny runs from God but soon she realizes that the emptiness in her life can only be filled by trusting God - even in, as Gertie calls them, “those world-class cruddy times”.

When Jenny is put in a life-threatening situation, Dents sacrifices himself to save her, a tangible proof of God’s love and care.

The final scene around the family table reinforces their trust in God’s constant care - and Sammy discovers that angels never really go away.
