A French poet once said, “A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it.”

Central Texas, 1871

Wesley Boggs and his older brother, Billy break camp and argue over a gold necklace, the only memento from their recently deceased mother. To Wesley, it is a treasure, symbolizing a hope to someday reunite with their estranged father. To Billy, it is just a trinket. Incensed at Wesley’s pinning over the past, Billy hurls the necklace into the surrounding brush, claiming their true inheritance is from their estranged father—a legacy of abandonment and violence. That violence is demonstrated within the hour when Billy murders a man in front of Wesley. Wesley flees from his brother, wanting no part of his diseased family tree.

Shortly thereafter, Wesley becomes a wanted man, not by the law, but by a gang known as the Notch Cutters. Scared and desperate, he decides to return to Billy for protection. Along the way, Wesley entangles himself with the family of the man Billy murdered and discovers the widow is wearing his mother’s necklace. The town’s preacher also noticed the necklace, recognizing it as the one he made and gave Wesley’s mother years earlier.

Billy returns to Wesley with the news that he is a Notch Cutter, a paid gun, and that Wesley is his assigned mark. Deciding to save his brother, Billy crosses the Notch Cutter Gang. After the scuffle, Billy and Wesley are tied by the neck to Ornamental Oak. The preacher, armed with the revelation that he is Billy's and Wesley’s father, attempts to rescue both of his sons. Too late for Billy, the preacher can only save Wesley.

During recovery, Wesley discovers the pastor is his father. Realizing his mother's prayers of being reunited with his father and forgiveness were answered, Wesley follows his God determined destiny, his family heritage, and becomes a preacher.
