With the help of an aging French inspector, a burnt-out ex- hustler and womanizer takes revenge against his former partners, by playing a scheme within a scheme to reveal who murdered his lover and left him for dead.

ROBERT KRAIT gets shot - and this marks the end of his former life. Once he was a talented, successful and wealthy hustler and womanizer, running schemes and cons in high class society. Now, he is a bum, a waster, and a drunk with a huge bar tab. His life consists of endless days of looking at his scars in the mirror, drinking himself to a stupor and reminiscing about how he met and lost both women he ever loved; AMANDA TATE, his mentor and true love, the woman who baptized him “the Cobra” because of his natural skill and talent, and MONIQUE LEBLANC, the fragile beauty who tragically took her own life, allegedly when she found out Robert’s real identity.

But today, on the 5th year anniversary of the day he was shot and left for dead by everyone he ever cared about, his past is destined to catch up with him, in the form of his former associate, a shady businessman called DEAN BUSHWICK. While Robert is getting gloriously drunk at O'Grady's Pub as usual, Dean walks in. He and his inseparable partner in crime COSMO MASSINI, are doing business with the new owner of a small-town factory in Robert's quaint rural hometown. Dean and Cosmo believed Robert dead, so now Dean tries to get him back in the game, much to Cosmo’s dismay. Robert initially refuses.

However, after a strained conversation with the junior partner, MARK HAMILTON, and accidentally eavesdropping into one of Cosmo's phone-calls where Cosmo carelessly admits he was actually the one who shot Robert some five years ago, Robert agrees to rejoin Dean's team, while working on a plan of his own, to expose Cosmo as his shooter and Monique's killer. He enlists the help of the French INSPECTOR BONNET, the man initially in charge of Monique's case investigation. He starts training a new, younger hot-shot for Dean's con scheme, a new "Cobra", all the while investigating the murder case secretly on his own. His goal is to discover the key person in the case, Cosmo's accomplish - the person on the phone. While searching for the accomplish, Robert checks into Amanda's whereabouts and quickly discovers that not only she wasn't involved, but that she had also been tricked into believing he was dead, and was now living a quiet life as a shop-owner, with her 5-year-old son. During a calculated break-in into her house, Robert discovers that the boy is actually his own son, and the real reason for Amanda’s disappearance 5 years past. Both these discoveries fuel his ire against Cosmo, and he pursues the case with heightened zeal.

Robert plays a dangerous game double-dealing Dean's team by secretly making arrangements for their opposition to win the factory commission deal. While pretending to be exclusively absorbed into training his young "Cobra" apprentice, PAUL LASSITER, for the hit on DEBORAH DERMONT, daughter and right-hand of the new factory owner, a hit that, if successful, would close the deal for Dean & co, Robert himself makes a hit on Deborah in secret - with destructive repercussions. On the night of the deal, when Paul makes his hit and Dean's team is celebrating, the scheme within the scheme is revealed. The "Cobra" has already swiftly stricken, securing the deal for the Russian opposition. While Robert hands the deal's signed documents to the Russians, Dean and Cosmo are waiting for him in his apartment - to settle things. But the Cobra is one step ahead once more. Wired and playing with his life, Robert stalls for time waiting for the critical murder confession, while Cosmo points a gun at him. Cosmo shoots, Dean instinctively saves the day, and in comes the cavalry - Inspector Bonnet with the FBI, finally having acquired the necessary incriminating evidence to put Cosmo and his accomplish, CLAUDE away for Monique LeBlanc's murder.

Dean’s world has shattered, and asks for an explanation. Robert and Inspector Bonnet take turns rewinding the recent past, illuminating the how and why of the case before the final showdown. They unveil the hidden aspects of the investigation, the moves that Robert made parallel to training Paul and dealing with Dean and his team. An investigation that yielded Cosmo's real name, as well as his accomplish - his old cellmate, Claude, the very person who had introduced Monique to Robert five years before, and was Cosmo's accomplish in Monique's murder. As Dean leaves, Robert hints he means to make amends to Amanda. In a meeting a few days after, the Russians gratefully agree to aid him in this endeavour, and the finale comes with Robert and Amanda reuniting in the playground they had once confessed their love to each other._
