SILENT SPRING
By Richard Simpson

GENRE: Biography
LOGLINE:

Female American marine biologist Rachel Carson is attacked by politicians and their industrial backers when she writes a best-selling book exposing the environmental devastation of pesticides. 2024 will be the 50th anniversary of her premature death from cancer.

SYNOPSIS:

Rachel Carson has been credited with giving birth to the environmental movement. Her book, Silent Spring, was a devastating critique of America's use of pesticides. Carson was a scientist, not a polemicist, so her work was research-based and written in calm, measured prose. The book's success, however, saw the political-industrial machine mobilized to crush her. Her research was questioned and, worse, her gender and her spinster-status led some politicians and industry figures to launch ad hominem attacks on her. Throughout her ordeal, she was sustained by her platonic relationship with another woman. Silent Spring caught the attention of President Kennedy and was instrumental in the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter. Looking for a producer.
