The Story of Mink Slide. #MinkSlide

SYNOPSIS:

Cordie Cheek - (1916 – 1933) was a 19-year-old African-American youth who was lynched by a white mob in Maury County, Tennessee near the county seat of Columbia. After being falsely accused of raping a young white girl, Cheek was released due to lack of evidence. In response, the county magistrate and two other men from Maury County abducted Cheek from Nashville, where he was staying with relatives near Fisk University, took him back to the county, and turned him over to a lynch mob. The mob mutilated the youth and murdered him by hanging.

On February 25th, 1946 the events leading up to this date are historical as this story represents the first African American racial riot after the second World War.

While segregation was at its height, tensions between white and black citizens still existed.

At approximately 10 am on Monday morning, James Stephenson, had accompanied his mother Gladys to the repair store, which had mistakenly sold a radio she had left for repair.

In a fight instigated by a white repair apprentice, black Navy veteran James Stephenson fought back and wounded radio repair man William M. Fleming.

A white mob soon gathered at the town square and the apprentice's father convinced the sheriff to charge both Stephenson's with attempted murder. #MinkSlide
