SYNOPSIS:

KAREN DEACON (26), a high-end model goes running at a gym in New York City. She wears a heart monitor that shows her heart rate stays remarkably the same no matter how hard she's running. After her workout, Karen leaves the city for Stonefield, Massachusetts, and her hometown where she gets a room at a Motel. She unpacks her clothes, which includes a police cap.

That night, SERGENT LACHAPELLE (50) is visiting the local convenience store. As he gets in his police car, he's hit in the back of the head with a baton wielded by a silhouetted assailant win a police cap. The next day, Karen goes for an interview with the Stone filed police department. CAPTAIN DONNELLY (48) tries to dissuade Karen from pursuing a career as a policewoman. Later, LIEUTENANT MCCORD (45), aggressive, recently and unhappily separated from his wife, vociferously expresses his doubts to Donnelly about Karen's suitability, recalling the tragedy in Karen's past that would lead her to hate policemen. McCord thinks she has an ulterior motive. Donnelly is not convinced.

A flashback shows Karen as a little girl. Her mother shot and her policeman father dead in an apparent murder-suicide. The cops present are LaChapelle, Falconer, Donnelly, and McCord. Falconer makes a comment that Karen's mother had alerted the police about her husband's abusive behavior several times, but admits they had done nothing about it.

At the department training field, Karen begins her physical trials along with the other cops, including competitive GORDO (28) who is very ambitious and craves a major leadership role in the department's SWAT team. Gordo plays practical jokes on Karen who never rises to the bait.

Karen returns to New York one weekend on the runway in Fashion Week. Afterwards she meets with her agent, FRAN (45) who reminds her that modeling had allowed her to escape the tragedy of "that day" twenty years ago. She begs Karen to come back to New York and to her successful career. Karen insists that it is because of that day she has to go back to set things straight, whatever the consequences. When Karen returns to Stonefield, Falconer is attacked in his home, knocked unconscious with a baton and disappears. McCord restates his suspicion of Karen to Donnelly. Donnelly refuses to accept his theory until there's more proof.

Karen investigates a freight yard and gets into a gun battle with an unseen assailant. Shortly after, Donnelly is attacked. He manages to escape from his attacker, but is severely injured and taken to the hospital.

McCord takes over command.

The entire Stonefield police force works around the clock to solve the crimes.

McCord believes Karen was the Captain's assailant and the freight yard incident a constructed alibi. Convinced Karen is the perp they are after, he assigns her to work with Gordo whom he trusts to keep an eye on her.

McCord has custody of his daughter, JESSIE that night and when he has to leave to investigate something, McCord takes Jessie to the Convenience Store and asks the proprietor Harry to look after her for fifteen minutes.

Karen and Gordo follow a lead to an abandoned building. Once inside, Karen and Gordo get into an altercation. Saying that she thinks Gordo is the perpetrator. she chases him into a section of the building where a firefight ensues.

Gordo eventually gets the best of Karen by tossing blinding tear gas and then hitting her with a baton - revealing him as the real cop attacker.

McCord finds the injured but conscious Karen. Gordo is taken into custody, but he quickly escapes. McCord and Karen immediately begin the hunt for Gordo but when they find him, Gordo has taken McCord's young daughter, Jessie, as a hostage. The police and Gordo stand at an impasse.

Another flashback to Karen's childhood tragedy reveals more information: Her father shot her mother and threatened to shoot her. And then five year-old Karen shot her father.

Karen, believing that the police tactics being planned will be unsuccessful and even result in Jessie being killed, takes matters into her own hand. Over McCord’s strong objections, Karen approaches Gordo in an attempt to outwit him and rescue Jessie; Gordo moves his gun from Jessie to Karen. but still clutches Jessie. Karen taunts Gordo, pushing him to the edge until, angered, he shoots her, dropping Jessie in the process. With Jessie in the clear, Gordo is killed a moment later by one of the policemen snipers. Karen’s Kevlar protected her from the bullets' penetration but their blows to her heart were a blunt force trauma and the EMTs cannot save her.

A funeral is held for the two murdered policemen and Karen. McCord attends with his daughter and estranged wife. Karen's sacrifice brings McCord and his family together.

The Stonefield Police Department refurbishes Karen's derelict childhood home and dedicates it as the Karen Deacon House, Shelter for Women.
