When an unhappy WWII English war bride, married to a man with whom she has nothing in common, wins a bus trip with her husband to Niagara Falls she has a life-changing encounter with Marilyn Monroe filming on location (Notting Hill, Bus Stop)
SYNOPSIS:
Theme: Can two people with nothing in common find love together? BUZZ(32) is a GI/Idaho
pig farmer, CLAIRE (26) is a London-bred cultured woman who married Bizz-a large bustling
man who easily embarrasses his wife- on the rebound when the love her life, an RAF pilot,
was killed during WWII. Their trip to Niagara Falls, won in a church raffle, raises Buzz's
hopes for a successful second honeymoon. But everything goes south when 20th Century
Fox invades Niagara Falls with its crowd-drawing star, MARILYN MONROE(26)and the
whole town is disrupted with full-up hotels and cancelled attractions. A subplot involves the
worried and klutzy mayor, concerned about the negative impact on tourism of the movie’s
murdered body found in the Canadian Falls, while craving the publicity he wants the
production to provide him for his re-election campaign. A discouraged Claire finally makes
up her mind to leave Buzz, but when she goes to the station to take a bus to the airport to fly
home to England, she finds the station has become a film set with no buses running. In the
women's restroom Claire encounters Marilyn Monroe hiding out for a secret smoke and they
banter, argue cultural differences while Buzz, who has found Claire’s farewell note, looks
frantically for her everywhere. Claire and Marilyn exchange identities (they are of similar size
and Marilyn supplies wigs) to allow Marilyn to enjoy a milkshake free from clamoring fans
and Claire sees Buzz, who doesn't recognize her in her Marilyn getup, rescue a lost child.
Marilyn and Claire take a swim and motorboat ride in the Niagara River where engine trouble
places them in danger from the Falls until Claire swims to safely secure the unanchored boat
to a rock in the nick of time. When Claire tells Marilyn of her ending marriage to a man with
whom she has nothing in common, and Marilyn tells Claire that she is about to be married to
Joe Di Maggio with whom she has nothing in common either. She says that she no longer
cares if her guy is a roughneck or a longhair or eats crackers in bed. She just asks one
question: "Is he a good catcher? Will he catch my heart when it's in danger of crashing on the
rocks or catch me before I fall on my face?” That's the question you need to ask yourself,
Marilyn says to Claire. Claire helps Marilyn finish the movie, 'Niagara' on schedule by
volunteering as her stand in during an arduous lighting scene. Later, in their motel room
Buzz has come to his own recognition of his wife’s needs and when Claire returns from her
afternoon with Marilyn, they both reach a new beginning in their marriage. A snapshot
montage shows Buzz and Claire finally having their second honeymoon in Niagara Falls now
that the movie people have left town. Final images show Joe DiMaggio hitting a home run
and Joe and Marilyn happy on their wedding day in 1954.
