SYNOPSIS:

In 1940, in a small village in the hills of the Caribbean island of Tobago, Linda McCartha Sand Lewis was born, the eighth child of a fisherman/Baptist preacher and a proud African woman.

In 2020, Calypso Rose turns 80 years old. She is the un-disputed Calypso Queen of the world. Calypso, the music born in the twin island state of Trinidad & Tobago, has had the world dancing from 1930’s. From Lord Invader, the Andrew Sisters, Harry Belafonte, the Mighty Sparrow, Arrow, and Calypso Rose, the Calypso beat has infiltrated many styles of music, and as testifies by Calypso Rose’s popularity at the age of 80, it still is very relevant today.

Her story is the story of the Caribbean people, from island villages or towns to the big cities of the world, London, New York, Toronto.

Her story is the story of independence, as England releases its holds on the West Indies and the islands learn to run their own politics. In 1962, the islands of Trinidad & Tobago become independent and elect their own government.

Her story is that of a woman fighting for recognition in a man’s world, a woman standing her ground and not taking “no” for an answer.

Her story is one of a woman claiming her sexuality, yet for most of her life living alone, although she was married twice, first to a man who was murdered and then to a woman.

Her story is that of a human being who survived cancer and lives with a pace maker, yet who performs to sold out crowds all over Europe.

Her story is that of an extraordinary person whose resilience, passion and positivity can only inspire and offer hope and possibility.

This is the story of Linda McCartha Sand Lewis, Calypso Rose, Calypso Queen of the World.
