About Michael

When Michael wrote his first screenplay, Useless, songwriting legend Arthur Hamilton (Cry Me A River) suggested he submit it to the Nicholl Fellowship, the writing competition run by the Motion Picture Academy. He did and it was a semi-finalist. As was his next screenplay, The Last Battleship, based on the true story of Michael’s father who was the American translator for the Japanese Admiral who designed the Yamato - the most powerful, and last, battleship ever built. His romantic comedy, Coolidge's Corner, was optioned by director Domenica Scorsese (daughter of Martin).

Michael’s home-base genre, however, is science-fiction. He helped create the mysterious Cicada 3301 online puzzle which has been the inspiration for several films and episodes of Mr. Robot and Person of Interest. He was also hired as a consulting producer for a series based on Cicada at Apple+.

Michael’s short film, The Aspirant, has begun making the festival rounds and has won nineteen awards thus far. It also received praise from industry veterans Gore Verbinski, Vicky Jenson, Matt Groening, Seth Green, and Wim Wenders. He has written a pilot and put together a pitch deck for a series based on The Aspirant called Tales of New California, which are interweaving stories of love and romance in the future.

While Michael is comparatively new to screenwriting, he is an industry veteran as a score composer who has worked for Jerry Bruckheimer, Ron Howard, George Lucas, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Matt Groening, and James Brooks. A former Governor of the Television Academy, an eight-time ASCAP award winner, and twice shortlisted for the Oscars, he scored television’s Cold Case and Siren, worked on The Simpson’s Movie and Dunkirk, and wrote and/or produced songs for Lorde, Roberta Flack, and The Monkees. He also composed the classic KitKat Gimme A Break jingle.

Unique traits: Michael is autistic. But, defying the stereotypes, he can look you in the eye, is outgoing, and has empathy by the boatload.
