Synopsis Episodes 1-3

Robin (12), Marian, his best friend Stephen and novice Sam are attacked by Philip the Sheriff's son and his allies who kill Stephen and taunt Robin for being a 'rich boy'. They take Robin and Marian to Nottingham Castle where Philip punishes Marian for disobeying her father, the Constable. To rescue Marian Robin makes a deal with a faerie, Aelfe, whose sister Philip has unwittingly killed, in return for his father's estate when he dies, thinking this is years away.

The Sheriff's soldiers invade Robin's village to demand taxes. Since the Saxon peasants – Robin's much-loved nanny, Anne and his friends' parents – can't pay, Robin takes his mother's silver cutlery and secretly leaves it in their homes. But Anne is accused of the theft by Robin's father, who has returned injured from the Crusade. She is thrown in the Castle dungeon. Robin, torn by guilt, leads his friends to rescue Anne but they're ambushed by Philip and his allies.

Chased by soldiers, they take refuge in Sherwood Forest where they learn to fend for themselves, until they meet real outlaws. Robin takes gold coins they've stolen from travellers and gives them to Anne's children. As the outlaws are about to take revenge, Robin again lets Aelfe save them. Her enchantment spirits them to a forest glade where a big hollow oak becomes their hideout.

They face off threats of wild boar and wolves, but the cold eventually drives them home with a story that Anne has died and her sister Catherine has replaced her to take care of her children, thereby avoiding her recapture.

The Lionheart's knights come to recruit boys for the Crusade. Philip again clashes with Robin and is humiliated. Robin tells his father he won't side with the Normans. His angry father disinherits him – just before dying. Aelfe, furious she will not get what Robin promised, uses magic to confiscate the entire estate. Robin and his mother are made homeless. Robin asks his Saxon friends if they will join the Crusade or stay with him. They vote to stay, and flee into the forest. They vow to take from the rich and give to the poor – proper outlaws now. Robin promises to retrieve his parents' estate from the aelves. Philip, rejected for conscription, swears revenge on Robin...
