LOGLINE:

‘Workers of all lands, sell your souls!’ Doctor Faustus, Moscow, 1937.

SYNOPSIS:

A world famous composer returns to Stalinist Russia with his American wife only to betray her for fame and fortune.

Sergei Olsufiev, a famous Russian composer, and his American wife of Russian origin, Margaret, are treated as celebrities by the Soviet authorities in an attempt to whitewash their bloodthirsty image. They are given a mansion with a service crew that includes a butler named Boris Nikiolaevich and a chaffeur, Peter.

After an approving call from Stalin the Olsufievs throw a party, during which James, an American embassy employee with an unrequited love for Margaret, gives her a letter from her friend from New York.

After the party Margaret catches Peter, the chauffeur, red-handed stealing her letter and slaps him in the face. However, Olsufiev explains that Peter is an agent of the NKVD (Soviet Secret Police) and Margaret reluctantly agrees to keep him.

Neverthless, this idyllic existence is disturbed once again when Peter rushes into Margaret's bedroom and urges her to leave the USSR because Olsufiev is having an affair with his young librettist, Mira, and is planning to annule his marriage to Margaret. As a result of the annulment, Margaret is arrested under the impression that she is an American spy.

Meanwhile, Olsufiev is enraged due to Peter telling Margaret the truth. Peter disappears, leading to a new chauffeur driving Margaret into a minor accident and her then becoming a prisoner under the NKVD. She manages to escape with the help of Peter, who was also arrested.

Ignoring Peter's warning, Margaret returns to the mansion seeking help from Olsufiev, but is instead met with him planning to have her arrested once more. Peter intervenes once again and Olsufiev pulls a gun, but is shot himself.

Peter and Margaret flee through a Finnish border, and during this desperate run encounter new friends (two low-life criminals) as well as foes (including Margaret's former butler, Boris Nikolaevich, an NKVD major).

Based on true events, this powerful story glimpses the horrors of Soviet communism and its destructive influence on the humanity of its Russian people, some of whom resisted until the very
