A young Irish woman who survived the Famine lives in chaotic 19th-Century New York and seeks a new life, but faces racism and a kidnapping before meeting an Irish rebel and becoming involved in the Young Ireland Movement. A shipwreck destroys her dreams, but out of the ashes she becomes a milliner and rises to fight for justice helping slaves escape to freedom.
