Alistair Rutherford lives and works in Edinburgh and has over 13 years’ script writing experience for film, theatre, radio, TV and interactive games. He develops original ideas, adapts existing work and has proven ability across genres, including sci-fi, comedy, thrillers and drama. He has a Masters in Screenwriting from Screen Academy Scotland.
He began writing after Anne, his wife, told him to stop talking about being a writer and actually do some. After dozens of short stories (one of which won a prize and a letter from the judges thinking he was Irvine Welsh writing under an assumed name) he tried his hand at writing scripts and found the area he loves the most.
Produced stage plays: Homecoming, An Island Between Heaven and Earth, Lizzy Strata, The Garden, The Lazar House and Passing Through. In 2011 the Stroke Association UK commissioned an adaptation of Stuart Hepburn’s autobiography, A Most Curious Detour into a full-length stage play which was subsequently performed in Edinburgh and Glasgow in 2012.
For BBC Radio 4: An Island Between Heaven and Earth (2004) and Radio Scotland: Happy New Year (2009). The stage version of An Island Between Heaven and Earth was invited to be part of the Iona Community’s 75th Anniversary in 2013 and toured to Iona, Govan and Edinburgh, selling out every show. In August 2014 it also had a successful 3-week run at the Just Festival in Edinburgh.
In 2013 he directed and produced his own radio play, an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Black Cat, and made it available through iTunes.
Screenwriting commissions include the screenplay for feature film Vault for Storymix (Sweden) and being hired by Edinburgh-based Ko Lik Films to work on Haunted Hogmanay (BBC1) and the BAFTA-award winning OOglies (CBBC). Three of his short films have been produced and have screened at film festivals in the USA, Canada and the UK. His feature-length, science-fiction screenplay Backflip has won 2 screenwriting competitions.
He is currently commissioned on two feature-length film projects. One is an adaptation of the Kindle-bestseller First and Only for Encapsulate Films and the other is a Dutch-Chinese spy thriller for Brainstorm Films.
