About Samuel

SAMUEL GARZA BERNSTEIN is a WGA inclusion and equity project honoree for "The Secret World of Danny Lopez," which was also 2019 winner at the New York Film Awards and a London C21 International Drama Summit nominee for Best Pilot Script. He won Best Screenplay at the London Independent Film Awards for "Elephant & Castle" and a G.L.A.A.D. nomination for the Showtime film "Bobbie’s Girl," which also garnered its star Bernadette Peters an Emmy nomination. His episodic credits range from the CBS drama "Judging Amy" to ABC/Disney's "W.i.t.c.h." and Nickelodeon's "Shimmer and Shine." He adapted his non-fiction book "Mr. Confidential" for the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2014, and his book "Uncommon Heroes" won a Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association.

Unique traits: Much of his life and writing reflect the wild intersections of modern life. Samuel was born to an undocumented Mexican mother who “passed” as white and a Jewish father who sold arms to the Palestinians when the family lived for a year in Egypt. “I was a gay Jewish kid surrounded by hot Muslims,” he says, “I lived in my head a lot, spinning stories.”

His father, Adam, the Naked Dad, is a self-proclaimed Socialist and the Smartest Person in the World. He'll tell you so himself. And after his divorce from Sam's mother he takes all the kids with him, though he doesn't have custody.
