About Michela

Michela Musolino is a Sicilian-American internationally acclaimed folk singer specializing in traditional and contemporary Sicilian Roots music, turning world fusion songs into timeless pieces and infusing her music with the emotions of life.Selections from her first CD, Songs of Trinacria, with Wilson Montuori and special guest artist Alfio Antico, have been widely broadcast on radio stations throughout the US and Europe, including NPR, and the BBC. Her music has been featured in Anthony Fragolaʼs Un Bellissimo Ricordo, a film documenting the anti-Mafia work of Felicia Impastato and her son, the legendary Peppino Impastato, and served as the musical backdrop for the 2009 FringeNYC Festival run of Terranova, a moving theater production depicting the controversial murder of sixteen-year old Sicilian immigrant , Josefina Terranova.
Musolino has performed live in the USA in landmark venues such as the Old Town School, Chicago, St. Markʼs Church in the Bowery, NYC , Yale School of Music; The Casa Italian Zerilli marimò at NYU; The Castello Normanno Svevo at Salemi, Sicily and was a frequent participant in “ L’ Evento in Memoria di Pino Veneziano,” the summer arts and cultural festival held in the temples in Selinunte, Sicily, where she has been a guest soloist and has also performed with Mondorchestra, The Palermo Jazz Ensemble and La Banda di Paceco.
Musolino was one of the contributing artists , among others such as Peppe Barrra, Pippo Pollina, Clara Salvo and Moni Ovadia, on the compilation CD, “Di Questa Terra Facciamone un Giardino,” a tribute to the Sicilian folk musician, Pino Veneziano. Recent projects include being a guest vocalist at the US debut of world-renown Sicilian singer- songwriter, Pippo Pollina and several tours of Sempri amMari, a theatrical presentation of Sicilian music dedicated to the sea. Musolino has also been and Artist-in-Residence at the Middlebury Italian Language School ( 2008, 2012, 2013 ) where she debuted ,”Si Diedero alla Macchia,” a musical theater concert performance dedicated to Southern Italyʼs brigands and was accompanied by composer and guitarist, John LaBarbera. Currently Musolino is performing with Terra Sangue Mare has released their eponymous CD in April of 2016. Terra Sangue Mare is the trio of Musolino, world-percussionist and bricoleur, Michael Delia and composer, author and accordion virtuoso, Fabio Turchetti. Together they blend traditional and contemporary Sicilian folk and roots music with world traditions to creates vibrant and passionate musical interpretations. Terra Sangue Mare tours Europe and The US performing concerts and musical theater. She participated in Mark Spano’s documentary film,”Reimagining Sicily,” released in 2016. Musolino also is a frequent guest at Cross Cultural Communications Publisher’s poetry events where she can be heard singing in English, Portuguese, Russian...and Sicilian. She made her Broadway debut when she sang Sicilian folk music for the Doug Hughs’ directed production of Tennessee Williams’, “The Rose Tattoo.” That performance inspired the formation her NYC based group, Rosa Tautata, which performs the folk and roots music of Sicily and Southern Italy with heavy emphasis on dance music. Musolino is also the founder of Rosa’s Drum: a cultural events and educational organization which promotes and teaches folk traditions from Sicily, Southern Italy and around the world.

A guest at her recent concert in Palermo said this:

Astonishing woman! I think she could be a study case for those who investigate the Italian American identity.. I have noticed something similar only in some second generation Italian Americans, but she is third generation!.She looked perfectly at home in that Sicilian American context.She probably knows more about Sicily than I dO,: surely about Sicilian Folk singers. I had a strange feeling, as though she was coming from a very far past, and in the mean time she might be absolutely comfortable with her double cultural dimension. - A. Di Maria
