THE CHURCH OF MIKE

THE CHURCH OF MIKE
By Charles Andrew

GENRE: Crime
LOGLINE:

An ex-hitman-turned-minister, with a direct line to the Almighty and a price on his head, seeks redemption as the pastor of a small-town church, only to be blackmailed into moonlighting for a local crime boss.

SYNOPSIS:

Mike, a Chicago hitman working for the Polish mob, starts hearing the “Voice of God” in his head, telling him to quit the business, and flees his vengeful employers, returning to his religious roots while on the run for two years. Now an itinerant minister, he lands in the small-but-stalwart factory town of Chauncey, Missouri, to do a weekend guest-speaking gig at an influential church. But when a run-in with a corrupt local politician/crime boss traps him in Chauncey and threatens his peaceful new life, Mike must decide whether to turn the other cheek – or listen to “The Voice,” and pick up his guns again.

Mike MacAuley is a hitman obsessively grieving over the death of his sister 15 years ago at the hands of Chicago’s Orellana drug cartel. Young, savvy, and deadly, he works for the Polish mob in waging perpetual vengeance against the ever-encroaching cartel. Everything changes, though, when a disembodied, Denis Leary-esque Voice speaks to Mike out of thin air one day, challenging him to question his life of unending revenge -- disrupting an important hit, and setting the Polish mob against him. Is it Mike’s subconscious? Does he really have a direct line to the Almighty? Convinced that he’s hearing the literal Voice of God, Mike defies the mob and flees Chicago – but not before stealing the mob’s money -- seeking redemption on the run by returning to his religious roots and becoming an itinerant lay minister.

Two years later, traveling to small-town Chauncey, Missouri, for a guest-speaking gig at Salem Road Gospel Church, Mike witnesses the brutal torture of a man at the hands of Chauncey mayor -- and church deacon -- Paul Glass.

Here's the kicker: Deacon Glass is secretly a crime boss vying for control of the county. Forced into a stalemate with Glass, Mike’s trapped in Chauncey -- manipulated into privately working as an enforcer for Glass, while publicly accepting the pastorship of Salem Road Church. Desperate to keep his past a secret, and always looking over his shoulder for the reappearance of the Polish mob, Mike must maintain leadership of the influential Salem Road Church and figure out how to work against Glass -- while working for him.

Now, as The Voice urges him to fight back and free the town, the county, and himself from Glass’s control, the question is: Will Mike’s true redemption come from the pulpit -- or by picking up his guns once again?
