A SLAVE TO THE GAME
By Michael Rwamunahe

GENRE: Biography, Drama
LOGLINE:

Based on the true story of Curt Flood, the baseball player who went on to sue the game (specifically the owners) for the right to choose which team he played for, in the process helping bring about free agency in sports.

SYNOPSIS:

"A well paid slave is, nonetheless, a slave." That is how Curt Flood famously described his lawsuit against Major League Baseball. Flood, one of the top center-fielders in the MLB had spent almost a decade playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, working his way to earning up to $90,000 a year, and drawing legions of fans (while also engaging in other hobbies such as drawing and painting.) However, when he is traded from the Cardinals, He finds himself face to face with the most unfair aspects of the game. Deciding to take action, Flood decides to sue the Baseball League (and specifically the team owners) to destroy the Reserve Clause which controls the fates of all baseball players. Flood argues that in the clause, in effect, means the players are nothing more than mere property of the owners, rather than human beings. Unfortunately, Flood is going up against a Supreme Court ruling that protects the reserve clause, arguing that Baseball (unlike other sports) has exemption from anti-trust legislation, and the counterarguments that state that the reserve clause allows for an even playing field for owners trying to recruit top talent for their respective teams. Despite being warned by his legal staff that the lawsuit will end his career as a player, and despite not even having the full support of his teammates and fellow players. Flood goes ahead with his lawsuit, determined to help baseball players control their destiny and make the Great American Pastime truly American.
