SYNOPSIS:

Men of Midway is the story of the men and woman responsible for the Battle of Midway, the greatest naval battle in US history. This battle changed the course of war for the underdog United States, 7 months after Pearl Harbor, in its’ fight against vastly superior Japanese forces.

This is a full length feature film.

It is a historical drama/action-adventure film.

It is Dunkirk meets Pearl Harbor.

Midway was the greatest battle in US history. This is the story about the men responsible for it.

This film takes place throughout the 20th Century, but most importantly, during 3 days in June of 1942, when American morale was at its lowest point in the war to the beating it took at Pearl Harbor.

In the opening scene, we meet a young Chester Nimitz, in his Uncle’s hotel in Texas where his chance meeting with a couple of well-dressed army officers from West Point sets him on his path towards becoming the greatest Admiral in US history. We see Chester grow into the family and naval man that he will become, and the lessons he learns and imparts along the way, that ultimately makes him a leader of men. We come to understand why Thomas Edison says about young Nimitz that “He possesses more brains, and is more practical, in my estimation, than any of the young officers who have visited us. I predict he will, some day, be filling Admiral Dewey's shoes.”

The role of an older Admiral Nimitz was portrayed by Henry Fonda in the 1976 film Midway. I can see Alexander Skarsgård as a potential Chester Nimitz, given the number of military films that he has starred, and excelled in.

We soon meet the young Isoroku Yamamoto, the reluctant Japenese Admiral and the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. We see his brilliance, his understanding of his future enemy, his intelligence, his playfulness, his unfaithfulness to his family, and his pacifist views, that are washed away by forces beyond his control.

We meet Joe Rochefort, a brilliant young man that dreams of becoming a naval aviator after he is inspired by seeing the Wright Brothers in flight. A man whom by twists of fate, meets Admiral Yamamoto, and ends up working under Admiral Nimitz, where he runs the code breaking operations of the United States. We discover the iconoclast who fights against Washington, Army, and Navy bureaucracy, and in doing so, ultimately hands Nimitz the keys to victory at Midway.

We meet Agnes Driscoll, known as Madame X, the brilliant American codebreaker who breaks the unbreakable Japanese codes, and catches a spy while she’s at it.

We discover John Ford, the four-time Oscar winning director, who originally wants to join the Navy, but ultimately ends up secretly working for the United States Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the CIA. We see him in action at Midway, where, sent by Nimitz, he ends up filming the live battle scenes of the Japanese attack and smuggles out the film that causes Eleanor Roosevelt to cry and President Roosevelt to say “I want every mother in America to see this picture!” This becomes an 18 minute film that wins him an Oscar for Best Documentary.

We live the Battle of Midway, through the eyes of the American and Japanese men on the ground, in the air, on the sea, and under it. We see the mistakes on both sides, and the luck, skill, and sacrifices made, that ultimately leads the US to victory.

We see how Nimitz becomes idolized for his role in securing victory over the Japanese, while Rochefort is denied recognition, by the very bureaucracies he fought against, of the equally important part he played in securing this victory. That is, until the Iran Contra intelligence scandal in 1986, 44 years later, brings him the fame and thanks of his country that he so richly deserves.
