THE HOLLYWOOD DEAL
By Vishaka Sriram

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

A failed comedian does a deal with the Devil for fame and stardom, but soon realizes he didn't get what he bargained for.

SYNOPSIS:

Andy has always been passionate about comedy, and dreamed his whole life of being a famous comedian. However, after giving up college to pursue his dream, and entering his thirties, even his optimism is waning. He is starting to realize that he might not have the talent he always was sure he had. His girlfriend leaves him for a professional athlete, and he has nothing. He has always been an atheist, and is prepared to start a drudge job, which his smug brother-in-law offers him on hearing about his failure.

He gives what he decides will be his last show, with barely anyone showing up. Unexpectedly, a conman named Dewer meets him as he drowns his sorrows later. Dewer and Andy drink entirely too much, share a great deal of woes. Dewer admits to Andy that he is a Trickster, a demonic figure, who has apparently started a long road to redemption. He offers Andy a deal, unbreakable and written in blood. Andy will have fame and fortune like no one else, and in return, Dewer will have Andy's life in twenty years. In his drunken stupor, believing that he has nothing to lose, and that this is bogus, Andy gladly signs.

Andy wakes up the next morning in a stranger's bed. He is struggling to remember what happened the night before. He stumbles around and realizes that this mansion is his, that the wealthy possessions are his and that he has a new life. He goes to work and gives a side-splitting comedy show. He remembers the Trickster from the night before, and tries to find him. The Trickster returns, claiming to be his agent.

Andy realizes that the blonde actress whose poster he passes every day is now his girlfriend. He also realizes that everyone loves him. He enjoys his newfound fame and stardom, going to red carpet events and award shows. He also starts to know more and more about the Trickster, who feeds him information which seems false to him. Andy makes Dewer do jobs for him.

Things take a turn for the worse when he loses his family and realizes that his friends and girlfriend only want his wealth and success. He also meets an ex-actor who helps him understand that his fame and stardom are short lived. He also is no longer able to write comedy and is changing into a more angry, arrogant, selfish and entitled person.

Things come to a head at a public event, which results in bad press and everyone hating him. The media, which he loved, now turns on him and uses this event as fodder. He retreats and attempts suicide.

Andy is saved by Dewer, the only person there for him, who he asks to give his old life back. Dewer refuses, and tells Andy he has to pay the price of asking for his wish by giving Dewer his soul. Andy asks for a new deal, in exchange for which Dewer can have his soul now. If Andy wins, he will get another shot at his old life. Dewer agrees in his greed. Andy manages to outwit Dewer, and gain his old life back. He goes to his drudge job with a smile on his face.
