A 12-year-old romantic recounts the story of the time he went on a fairy-tale-like journey to the U.S. and clashed with his widowed mother in order to find his princess and fulfill his father’s dying wish.
SYNOPSIS:
PRESENT DAY. DALLAS, TX. AMOBI (12, idealistic) hesitates to pick up a paintbrush as we’re propelled into the past. Amobi begins the narration of his story. OWERRI, NIGERIA - 12 MONTHS EARLIER. The Njoku family entertains a group of guests. Amobi and his sick father, EZE CHUK (47) escape the party to dance in a field of yellow trumpet flowers for the last time. That night, Chuk retells the story of how he and Amobi’s mother, BLESSING (30, reserved) met. He makes Amobi promise to find his soulmate. Chuk dies. Blessing is left with nothing. She and Amobi are forced to move to Dallas to stay with Chuk’s father, NNA NNA OBA (70s, head in the clouds) who combats his loneliness by communicating with the ghost of his dead wife, NNE NNA ANNETTE. Amobi becomes plagued by Chuk’s promise, and in an attempt to keep Chuk alive, he plants yellow trumpets, his dad’s favorite flower, in the school’s greenhouse. After a rough introduction to his American middle school, he meets TOMMY (12) and their friendship is immediate. Blessing searches for work and refuses to accept Oba’s money, determined to save up for an apartment. Amobi comes across MAY (14), the girl of his dreams, who is in a relationship with JERRY. Blessing disapproves of Tommy and May—she claims Amobi can’t live life in a fairy-tale, like Chuk and Oba, so she threatens to forbid Amobi from seeing his new friend if he doesn’t get his grades up and stop pursuing May.
