SYNOPSIS:

Open on a small Texas town and the Carter family running their weekly errands. During their stop at Schaeffer's General Store, James Carter stops some thugs from harassing the shopkeep. Later that night the thugs, revealed to be Marshal's deputies, carry out a disastrous midnight, no-knock raid for trumped up charges on the Carter home. Several deputies are killed as James defends his family, however, he is hauled off in chains.

His wife Elizabeth charges into town the next morning, determined to do whatever is necessary to free her husband. However, the mayor and the marshal have decided to make an example of him in order to keep the townspeople in line. Elizabeth rides off, determined to find just one ally who will acquit her husband at his now looming trial. But the town's leadership has too tight of a stranglehold and Carter is eventually found guilty and sentenced to death.

Elizabeth pleads with James to send for his former crew to free him by force, but James refuses to lose faith in their town - knowing justice will eventually win and out desperately not wanting to see his town destroyed by his overzealous friends. Elizabeth sends for them anyway - using her children to skirt her promise to James to not go after them herself.

Not one to wait, Elizabeth continues to seek alliances to help free her husband while keeping the marshal and his deputies at bay. Hounded at every turn she eventually finds the help she needs by negotiating business alliances and empowering the women of the town to stand with her. But for every advance she makes, the cost rises. As the townspeople become a lit powderkeg, she and the women who now have nothing to lose make a last bloody stand, taking out the marshal and his deputies to free her husband. An ad-hoc trial is held, the mayor and marshal are found guilty of multiple charges, and are dragged to the gallows in her husband's place. James' former crew finally arrives, too late to save the day and nearly botching the execution in the process before the town and the Carters return to their homes, ready to face the new day.
