SOUTH OF MARKET
By Howard Green

GENRE: Thriller, Comedy
LOGLINE:

A naive software engineer is plunged into the dangerous underground world of San Francisco’s nightlife scene after meeting an edgy, alluring club girl and tangling with her unhinged, drug-dealing DJ ex-boyfriend.

SYNOPSIS:

Three weeks ago things were going very well for Alan Siegel. Recently arrived in San Francisco, he had landed a plum position with the hottest tech startup in town, and the future looked very bright.

And then he met Chlo.

Now he’s sitting in an interrogation room at the Hall of Justice, trying to piece together the previous night’s events and explain to a skeptical cop how he came to be face down on Ocean Beach surrounded by twenty-thousand dollars’ worth of Crystal Meth.

The straight laced Alan’s infatuation with the free-spirited Chlo leads him down a rabbit hole of wild raves, mind-altering substances, and colorful scenesters. But when Chlo abruptly abandons him in this strange and disorienting wonderland, his night soon becomes a nightmarish nocturnal odyssey through the dark streets of SOMA. Robbed, drugged, mistaken for a thief, and hopelessly lost, he purses Chlo through underground parties, fetish dungeons and post-apocolyptic fight clubs, and ultimately encounters DJZ-Thrust, Chlo’s obsessed former lover and would-be gangster. Drawn into her dark past and a perilous drug plot, Alan and Chlo must evade and outwit the violently unhinged Z-Thrust and his gang to survive the night and return to the light.

Written by screenwriter and long time San Franciscian Howard Green, South of Market, is darkly comic, romantic thrill ride city’s through the city’s eclectic nightlife and tech culture. Taking cues from such night in the city classics such as Martin Scorsese’s “AfterHours”, “Into the Night” and “Something Wild”, the script is an affectionate tribute to San Francisco’s vibrant subcultures and changing demographics, the intermingling of counterculture, art and technology that fuels its unique nightlife.
