LISTEN TO WHAT I MEAN
By Richard Buzzell

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE: A single woman in her late thirties wants a family before it's too late. As she becomes increasingly desperate, she manages to discover love where she thought it had been lost.

SYNOPSIS:

This is a romantic dramedy that plays upon the un-realistic expectations that so many of us have for our romantic relationships. Upon attaining her desired level of career success, the lead character Katherine finds herself feeling unexpectedly unfulfilled. When she decides that she wants a family before it's too late, she launches herself into a series of misadventures. Katherine's younger less-complicated friend brings the madcap, providing the fun factor to the story. She's the one who perceives the emotional obstacle that Katherine is so desperate to avoid. She indulges Katherine's self-deceptions, knowing that they'll eventually go bust. The title phrase, "Listen To What I Mean", is a reference to the psychological impasse that exists between Katherine and her former boyfriend. Although the two of them are still in love with each other, they must navigate this impasse in order to get what they both want. Much of the appeal of this script comes from the character of Katherine. Her combination of confidence and insecurity makes her someone that the audience can see themselves in. This vulnerability hiding behind a brash exterior makes her an instinctively sympathetic character that the audience will feel compelled to care about. This material will be an easy sell to any actress interested in an opportunity to play both somber scenes as well as manic comedic scenes. The role requires projecting a sincere sense of yearning on Katherine's part as she faces her future. The most critical dramatic conflict Katherine faces is the one within herself and this is what will engage the audience on an emotional level. This is a script aimed at the mostly-neglected market segment of women in the 20 to 60 year age bracket who love movies, but don't want to have their intelligence insulted.
