DRAMA QUEEN GRANDMA
By Brian Kennington

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

A fading bombastic Broadway actress creates havoc in her son's home and her grandchildren's high school when she takes over directing the school play.

SYNOPSIS:

SYBIL SMITH, a once famous English Broadway actress, out of work and broke, flees New York city and inserts herself in her estranged son ROLAND's home in Omaha, Nebraska.

Roland, grieving over the death of his wife, is now even more upset at his mother's sudden arrival, wanting to avoid anymore animosity. Sybil just wants to lay low and reconnect with her two grandchildren, DAVID and EMMA, however, she is slowly drawn into the teenagers' lives.

David is starring in his high school production of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" and they have lost their director. The school would lose its arts program if the play is not entered in the state finals. Sybil is coaxed into assuming the director's role and she takes it on with full gusto.

Emma, shy and aloof to her family, is living out her fantasy as a musician in a punk rock band. Sybil stumbles upon Emma's secret and recruits her granddaughter and band to play the music in the show, now turning the classic play into a punk fest filled with a balls to the wall score and raucous energy.

At home, Sybil coaxes David and Emma to pursue their dreams of performing in the arts, much to Roland's dismay. He plans for his children to have more lucrative professional careers, causing Roland to fight with Sybil over her interference. Sybil, sensing Roland has still not gotten over his wife's death, consoles him and attempts to persuade him to move on in his life and let his children live theirs, which Roland strongly resists.

During all of this Sybil unleashes her professional standards with political incorrectness and swearing profusely at rehearsals, resulting in complaints from students and parents. She resorts back to her old theatrical party self; buying cannabis illegally, drinking, and even having a fling with the high school principal.

Roland has finally had enough of his mother's antics and informs Sybil that she will have to leave their home when the play is over.

Just when it appears that everything is going downhill, everything turns around. The play opens, wins the state finals and saves the arts programs. Sybil and Roland make up and become closer, while he relinquishes control over his children's futures. To top everything off; Sybil's dormant career is revived as she ends up starring in a big feature film.
