AMONG THE WILDFLOWERS
By Brian J Logan

GENRE: Independent
LOGLINE:

Fate brings together a control freak facing a sudden existential crisis and a free-spirited woman with a secret for one night that will change their lives forever.

SYNOPSIS:

The sun rises over the city, a new dawn to a new day. Samantha/Sam, 30’s, beautiful olive skin, wavy beach hair, a wildflower, getting an early start on her job as an Uber driver runs into her friend Gloria, 50’s, outside their apartments. The short conversation reveals that Sam is leaving tomorrow on an open-ended road trip, Gloria’s concern about Sam taking this trip alone hints that there’s more to Sam’s story, and that we never know where a day will take us.

Sam drives various passengers around the city, and eventually drives by a building where on a floor high above the streets, Mark, 30’s, handsome, control freak, nails a career defining sales pitch to the stodgy Mr. Johnson who asks that paperwork be drawn up and ready for signatures in the morning. While celebrating, Mark tells his co-worker Dan, 30’s that he is going to ask his girlfriend Erica, to marry him at dinner that night. Dan questions Mark on the pending proposal, but ultimately wants Mark to be happy and drops it. Mark visits Erica’s office to solidify their plans for the evening when he catches her making out with the intern!

The loss of control throws Mark into an existential crisis, and after Erica finishes ripping the break-up band-aid all the way off, Mark leaves the office and begins to walk aimlessly. Mark eventually ends up in the middle of nowhere and so he does what any person would do in this situation, he calls an Uber. Little did he know that this ride would change his life forever.

Sam finds Mark on the side of the road like some pathetic abandoned animal, and after a long conversation forges a surprising connection between the two Mark convinces Sam to spend the rest of her last day with him. Together they explore the city taking and begin to open up to each other about their lives and the events that have shaped them, for better or worse. For Sam it’s her mother’s battle with cancer, and for Mark it’s the accidental death of his little brother that he blames himself for. Their bond grows as they share what makes them who they are today. Sam isn’t telling Mark everything as she hides serious health problem that threatens to derail their perfect day. As the night progresses so does their bond, but eventually they must decide, is this just for the night or should their story continue. However, one thing they both realize is that neither of their lives will ever be the same.
