Over the course of a long advertising/marketing career, I owned and ran agencies and offices for major global companies. All the while, I was a prolific "closet copywriter"; compiling an impressive portfolio of award-winning materials and content. I left the corporate world in 2002 and consulted for a while before committing my future to becoming a successful screenwriter.
What I didn't know is that mastering screenwriting is running a gauntlet of failures, rejection, occasional accolades and--if one is wise--soaking up every filmmaking opportunity your means and schedule will allow. You also need three things: humility, persistence and the desire to learn. Connections don't hurt, either.
Being accustomed to success, I was very impatient early on. I turned down an option on my very first feature script; then grew frustrated that nothing was selling. This led to a decision to write, produce and direct my own short film to "show off" my talents. I wrote a script titled, "The Gold Nugget" while on a cross-country flight; hit the ground running and set pre-production in motion. My naiveté was on full display as my story included horses, children (on horseback), change of seasons and a vintage 1800's log cabin. All in the mountains of Colorado. Six months later the film was in the can and my wallet was $15,000 lighter. But the experience was priceless.
I went on to write several short scripts for a compilation series called "Hotel Horrors". Each short would take place in either a hotel, room, motel room, inn or B&B. I produced/directed the first two ("Room Service" and "Just a Nibble") in LA and Las Vegas before my team split up due to other opportunities and obligations. I'd like to finish the full compilation some day.
Over the years, I've written numerous feature screenplays and many shorts. Each new script is better than the last and every script that I've entered into competitions has placed or won. However, I have yet to reach the summit and actually sell a script. I'm hoping that will change as I've finally discovered my voice and have committed to stay true to it. It shows in my work and the positive notes, feedback, coverage and accolades my scripts are receiving.
