GENRE: Horror, Comedy
LOGLINE:

A socially-conscious ER doctor is compelled to join a mismanaged hospital for mythical creatures after she's unwillingly turned into a vampire.

SYNOPSIS:

Empathetic ER doctor EFFIE CANTREL (33, smart, friendly, driven, Cristin Milioti/Kelly Marie Tran type) is a bleeding heart who always serves everyone but herself. Effie just can’t say no when someone’s in need and even teaches part-time at the local medical university. In fact, Effie’s about to go on a humanitarian medical trip, leaving her tepid relationship with her boyfriend on the rocks.

A centuries-old vampire with progressive views, KATERINA SMOLIEK (appears 35, bold, brash, flamboyant) is a junior doctor, with seniority at the Vamport Hospital for Mythical Creatures. Bored, stubborn, and vain, Katerina is out to recruit new doctors. And by ‘recruit’, we mean turn them into vampires. Katerina targets Effie. Why Effie? Firstly, she’s a woman, and Vamport has been dominated by old school male vampires for too long and if she’s honest with herself Katerina finds Effie attractive.

Hospital administrator BEZELBUB aka “BEEZ” is a literal demon: red skin, horns, intimidating voice. Beez wants to be a likable demon, but his mood swings will give you whiplash… and sometimes he’ll literally lash you. Facing a shortage of doctors, Beez gives Katerina permission to “recruit” some more.

And that's how Effie ends up on a gurney at the Vamport Hospital…

…bitten by a vampire! A disoriented EFFIE is wheeled past rooms of rock trolls vomiting pebbles, mermaids in therapy pools, and a leprechaun hooked up to a rainbow-colored IV. Effie passes out from the symptoms of her transformation. She awakens to a disturbing thirst for blood and the unsettling ability to spontaneously transform into a bat. Effie is horrified to realize: she’s a vampire.

The staff is excited to have Effie there and KATERINA helps nurse her through the transformation, without letting on that she’s the one who turned her. Trying to help, a boring suburban vampire doctor gives her PB&J’s (peanut butter and jugular). BEEZ offers Effie the job at Vamport, but Effie is in denial and insists she’s still going on her humanitarian mission.

Effie tries to return to human society but she craves the blood of all the humans around her, sunlight threatens to kill her, and vampiric hydrophobia prevents her from crossing water. She is cut off from half the city much less travel around the world. Trapped, frustrated, and forlorn, Effie has an identity crisis on multiple levels.

Under the guise of saying goodbye before her trip, Effie sees her boyfriend JARRETTone last time. When she goes to kiss him goodbye, she is overwhelmed with the urge to kill him and drink his blood. She manages to stop herself, abruptly leaving a very confused Jarrett.

Emotionally distraught, Effie returns to Katerina for comfort. Katerina uses her vampiric thrall to begin wooing Effie, who is more amenable to the romance than previous thralls.

Effie’s core desire to help those in need leads her to finally accept the job at the Vamport Hospital. It’s clear the staff is incompetent: bickering werewolf orderlies, self-obsessed vampires, a morose Igor in the morgue. Effie will save lives, be they monsters or not.
