BREADWINNERS
By Thoko Zulu

GENRE: Sports, Comedy
LOGLINE: Two rural women relocate to the city for employment, leaving the home and children in the custody of their jobless husbands.

SYNOPSIS:

Inspired by the American series "Grace and Frankie" Two traditional wives from two conflicting tribes are forced to relocate to the city for employment when their husbands lose their jobs. NTOMBI is offered a wardrobe internship in Bulawayo when a new international film company visits her village looking for raw talent. CHIPO’s uncle finds her a job as a general hand at a bread making factory in the same city. Both women leave their village homes and children in the custody of their jobless husbands. To cut down on accommodation costs, Ntombi and Chipo share a huge one roomed cottage, where they discover their mutual passion for football, but are in competition supporting two top rival football teams in the first Zimbabwean league. In their new found freedom the two women attend football matches, get involved in shady deals and illicit pleasures threatening the breakdown of their marriages. Ntombi, who hides her insecurities behind a sexy wardrobe and a string of faked celebrity friends sees her relocation to the city as an opportunity to rebel and avenge the sins of her fornicating husband using naive Chipo as a scapegoat. A psychological bully on the mend, Ntombi's husband KHUMALO, has relocated back to the country jobless, and with type two diabetes after exhausting all his savings and retrenchment benefits with other women in South Africa. Desperate for a quick reunion with his estranged wife, Khumalo is feeling pressured to impress, but his health condition which has left him with penile dysfunction forces him to secretly turn to traditional medicine to boost his sexual libido, risking complications to his health. SIMBA, who is Chipo’s doting and loving husband comes from a strict cultural background where men and women were assigned specific traditional gender roles. He witnessed a ritual murder as a young boy, where he saw his grandmother’s mutilated genitalia. Simba firmly believes that sex is only for reproductive purposes, and is adamant to find a new job so that Chipo can go back to their village and resume her duties of looking after their children. Married a virgin and a first timer in the city, Chipo has never experienced foreplay or orgasm. She is caught between the excitement of the hustle, preserving traditional customs and her obligations to her husband. When Ntombi invites her first visitor, American comedian and actor, KEVIN HART to the house, Chipo finds herself engulfed by new sexual feelings she no capacity to deal with. After months of trial and error, the two women eventually become best friends and secret allies.
