Synopsis

We open in the early hours of the morning of Thursday the 14th of February 2013. Oscar’s neighbours are awoken by the sounds of loud bangs and a woman’s screams coming from his house. They hear Oscar and Reeva call for help. They try to call security when shots ring out.

Reeva is an empath. She is in love, so she ignores all the red flags. She has been in an abusive relationship before. She is attracted to Oscar’s glamourous lifestyle, but she loves him for who he is, not his money. She is determined to make it on her own. She wants to be a celebrity so that she can help women and animals. She wants to get her own apartment. She is a strong woman, who stands up for herself. During the story she is writing a speech to give to a girl’s high school about women standing up for themselves.

Oscar is a perilous narcissist. He is prone to crying and outbursts of verbal and physical anger. He was overheard on the phone by a fellow sportsman, crying and screaming at his ex-Samantha Taylor when she was trying to leave him for Quinton van der Burgh. When he lost at the Paralympics, he threw a tantrum in the rooms: crying and screaming, punching the table, kicking the wall, and throwing a chair. Oscar is under a lot of pressure to keep winning in order to keep sponsors. He personally threatened to break Quinton van der Burgh’s legs for dating his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Taylor. When Quinton’s friend Marc Batchelor rang Oscar on Quinton’s behalf, he threatened to break his legs, saying that he had bats.

Oscar is reckless. When he was drunk, and he crashed his dingy into a jetty. He is also a liar. He claimed that he crashed because the sun was in his eyes. When he is angry with Reeva, as a punishment he speeds at 200km per hour.

Oscar is prone to violence. He punched his garden door whilst trying to keep his house guest Cassidy Taylor Memory out, injuring her leg. He claimed that she injured herself by bashing the door to try to get back into the house. He denies the Quinton, Batchelor incident when he is asked about it by a journalist. His income depends on him maintaining a squeaky-clean image.

Oscar is a skilled shooter. We see him practicing at the shooting range using a Taurus parabellum, the same gun he uses to kill Reeva. He keeps this gun in his bedroom for his protection. He always carries his gun with him. He is reckless with his gun: He shoots a gun out of his sunroof in anger, after being stopped by police. He accidently discharges his gun in the crowded Tasha’s restaurant. In the past he shot a dog in the head after he had run it over and paralysed it. By contrast a young Reeva, carried her pet dog around her garden because it didn’t have the use of its legs.

Oscar is unfaithful. He cheated on his girlfriends: Melissa Rom, Jenna Edkins and Samantha Taylor. When his girlfriend’s leave him, he moves on to another in order to cope. When he had problems with Samantha Taylor he fell back on Jenna. He will repeat this with Reeva. After every argument he has with Reeva, he calls Jenna. Even meeting up with her on one occasion. On twitter people try to warn Reeva about Oscar’s cheating nature but she thinks they are just jealous.

Oscar is controlling, possessive and jealous. He had problems with his ex-Vicky once she started to go to University and make new friends. He used to interrogate Samantha Taylor over her clothes, her make up and her belly ring. He used to check to see who she was talking to on Facebook. He used to scream at her in anger and get physical with her. He once locked her in his house, so she couldn’t go out. When he starts dating Reeva, he sees and calls her every day. He messages her again, if she doesn’t message back straight back. He calls her best friend Gina if Reeva doesn’t answer her phone. He stalks Reeva at an event. He is possessive of her at functions. He is insecure when she goes to Jamaica for filming. He gets angry and abusive when Reeva sends him a naked photo that she had had taken for her ex-boyfriend and his friend Francois. Reeva almost leaves him over this.

At their mutual friend, Darren’s engagement party, Oscar gets jealous when Reeva touches her male friends’ arm, whilst she is talking with him. He makes them leave the party early. Reeva is upset at his behaviour, but she forgives him. At the Virgin Sports awards Oscar gets upset with Reeva for not staying by her side the whole time. People witness the couple arguing.

Oscar’s relationship with Jenna suffered because competitions meant that he was away overseas for a long time. On the very day that Reeva is at the launch of her T.V show, ‘Tropika Island of Treasure’, Oscar is planning his travel itinerary with his agent Peet Van Zyl. Oscar expects Reeva to go with him. Reeva tells him that she will see if she will be able to go away at the same time.

The day before Valentine’s Day, Reeva makes a collage for Oscar to rival the one that his ex-Jenna, ‘Baby Shoes’ made for him.

On the morning of Valentine’s Day, Reeva’s agent tells her that if she goes away for Oscar’s 6-month season, she will damage her career just as it is starting to take off. She has a meeting with her agent, to sign her new contract, later in the day.

On this morning Oscar makes three calls. One is to his bank – they are approving his bond for his new house. The second is to his realtor. He is meeting with him to sign the papers for his new home in Johannesburg. The home that he expects Reeva to move into with him. The third is to his agent Peet van Zyl about the airline tickets for Reeva. During the course of the day Reeva tells an emotional Oscar that she cannot go overseas with him. She was not planning to go back to Pretoria to Oscar’s because she has to give a speech about empowerment to a girl’s high school in Johannesburg in the morning, but Oscar threatens to hurt himself, so she agrees to go back to his place. Oscar also threatened to hurt himself if Samantha Taylor did not answer his calls during the London Paralympics. In the past at 3am in the morning, whilst he was on his way to make up with his girlfriend Vicky after a big row, he crashed his car.

Reeva cancels a late evening event, that is important to her career, and she drives to Oscar’s place. When Oscar drives up into his driveway, he is on the phone to Jenna. At dinner, Reeva shows Oscar her new contract. The couple do not get to finish dinner because Peet van Zyl interrupts them by sending Oscar an email about organising airline tickets for Reeva. The couple argue about Reeva’s not being able to go overseas with Oscar. Because they have argued for so long, it is too late for Reeva to go home so she sits in Oscar’s upstairs lounge working on her speech which is about how women should stand up for themselves.

Oscar and Reeva are unable to sleep. At 1.48am, Reeva rolls over to talk to Oscar, who is sitting up in bed. He shows her photos of cars that he is looking at. Just then a ‘Whats App’ message from ‘baby shoes’ aka Jenna pops up on his screen. Reeva snatches the phone off him and jumps out of bed.

Reeva tells Oscar that she is leaving and that she is going to tell everyone the truth about him. She puts Oscar’s phone in her pocket.

There is a violent struggle between Reeva and Oscar at first because he wants to stop her leaving and then because he has to stop her from leaving with his phone.

Oscar grabs Reeva violently as he tries to stop her leaving him via the bedroom door. There is a violent struggle. Both of them use Oscar’s cricket bat against one another. Reeva gets Oscar’s prosthetics off of him. Oscar cannot let Reeva leave with his phone. He fires a pellet gun at her. Reeva locks him on the other side of the bedroom door. When he breaks through, he sees Reeva run to the toilet with her phone. She has forgotten that she has his phone. Reeva locks herself in the toilet. Flashback to Reeva and her mother hiding in her locked bedroom when burglars with machetes ransacked her mother’s house.

When she locks herself in the toilet with her phone and his, Oscar bashes the door with a cricket bat to try to get to her. Because she cries for help, Oscar also cries for help. Just in case the neighbours have heard Reeva, he wants to make it look like a home invasion. Reeva tries to use her phone to call for help, Oscar shoots at her to stop the call. Once he realises what he has done, it’s too late. He has to finish her off. Afterwards he tries to clean up the crime scene. He rescues his phone from Reeva. He leaves his business phone for the police to find.

Oscar calls the ambulance but then hangs up. He wants to be seen to have been calling an ambulance. He actually calls his friend and the estate manager. When neighbours and the paramedics arrive, Oscar pretends that he is trying to save Reeva. Oscar tells everyone, including the police that he thought Reeva was an intruder. Oscar’s lawyer removes items from Oscar’s safe. Oscar’s brother Carl takes Oscar’s personal phone and Oscar’s sister Aimee takes Reeva’s handbag, from the crime scene.

Oscar didn’t want anyone to get his phone. He was involved in organised crime. His dealings with these figures is revealed throughout the story.

There is an undercurrent of organised crime involving gangsters, bouncers, nightclubs, sportsmen and politicians in South Africa. Reeva’s tattooist says that Oscar does not have a good name on the street. When he accidently discharges his firearm at Tasha’s restaurant, Oscar is happy that Darren pays for the damages. He does not want to owe anyone anything. After Oscar threatens the businessman Quinton van der Burgh, Marc Batchelor offers to call Oscar. Marc Batchelor is friends with Mikey Shultz an underworld figure and hired hitman - known as the sheriff because he takes care of problems. A friend of Marc’s punches Oscar in the eye when he is out in Sandton leading Oscar to ask Marc Batchelor to attend a meeting at Hawks in Gauteng. Hawks deal with organised crime. Oscar’s friend, Justin Divaris knows the head of Hawks, general Shadrack Sibija. When he is on trial, Oscar goes out with his protection is Guil Yahav, a former bouncer who hacked another bouncer to death. Crashing the VIP room, Oscar confronts the businessman, Jared Mortimer who is also a friend of Guil Yahav. Oscar tells him that he has statements and evidence that would get a friend of Jared’s in trouble but that he will not use it because he is not that kind of person. Samantha Taylor, Oscar’s ex-girlfriend said that Oscar was always agitated and secretly texting people on the phone.

Oscar left his white business phone under towels in the bathroom for the police to find. He kept his personal phone with him at all times and gave it to his brother Carl to take away from the crime scene. Carl has a Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information systems.

When he is out with Guil Yahav, Oscar tells Jared Mortimer that his family is wealthy and connected. When he is arrested a police officer tells him that he is a friend of his family and that he has nothing to worry about.

Reeva’s mother and her friends, Samantha and Gina find out that Reeva has passed.

Later that morning Labourers remove a billboard with Oscar’s face on it and it comes crashing to the ground.

Hey Kenicha, I think a series about this case is a great idea. It's a fascinating story - I've read about it before. However, your logline needs to be tightened up a lot. I would take out all of the sentences beginning with "We see," and keep your great starting point. I'd recommend something like this, "After a rich, famous, Paralympic athlete murders his beautiful girlfriend - an up and coming actress and model - on Valentine's Day 2013, the truth behind their relationship and the killing is revealed."
