Denel Honeyball

Denel Honeyball attended The National School of the Arts where she received Best Dramatic Actress and Most Theatrically Innovative Performer awards in her final year. She then spent two years overseas and while in London took a course in Performance Art at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She also performed in a piece at the Tate Modern directed by FrenchMotthershead. On her return to South Africa Denel completed her studies at Rhodes University where she took Drama in her undergrad but majored in Politics and Philosophy. In 2007 she performed in the Rhodes Grahamstown National Arts Festival Production, the double-bill, Confessions of a Large Posterior, in the play Venus by Susan-Lori Parks. Since her return to Johannesburg, Denel has been working in radio as the news reader and co-host of the 101.9 Chai FM Breakfast Show with host, Helen Desbois. She also performed in the National Children's Theatre's production, Picture This in 2011 and will re-visit the role in their 2012 run. Denel took part in PopArt's 24 Hours in The City show and was cast in Asher Stoltz and Bryan Van Niekerk's play, Holy Spirit. Denel is currently performing in a comedy sketch show titled Oddtitties and Oddballs written by That Company! and showing at various venues around Johannesburg. She will also be returning to the Grahamstown Arts Festival in Nickolas Ellenbogen's play, Horn of Sorrow, directed by Miles Petzer. The show will follow the festival with a run at the State Theatre. In recent TV work, Denel played the supporting role of Maxine in eTV's Mzansi Love movie Something's Cooking. In 2013 Denel will be directing Shakespeare's Othello set in a modern South Africa to be performed at the Windybrow Theatre, Jo'burg Theatre's and POPart Theatres.
