About Julie

Award-winning writer and veteran actor has spent her life in the trenches of the Entertainment Industry. The daughter of a high school English teacher - writing was in the cards, always. Playing the Lion to Androcles she got her first big audience laugh. Hooked. Theatre, her first love. Creating laughter and inspiration has been her calling ever since.

4 years of Theatrical Scholarship in Texas deepened her abilities. New York seemed only natural to be next. There Off (way off ‘-) Bwy she co-produced, edited, acted and wrote with a hometown playwright whom she had mentored through his Dallas Theatre Center opening. She spent 2 years at New York’s Actors Institute in the Master Acting Class and also tapped for the exclusive Leadership Program getting to act with some of the best talent on Broadway there.

She relocated to Seattle after time in LA and took a job on Northern Exposure. Encouraged there for her ear for dialogue, seemed like time to now write! 3 screenplays and TV specs later, she got repped by a WGA agent.
Her taste, always in the outrageous direction - led to her first play, an irreverent black comedy, submitted to Actors Theater of Louisville with The Office of Christ script.  Till There Was You then written and polished. It became an award-winner as a Semi-Finalist with SCRIPTAPALOOZA and Quarter-Finalist with NexTV's Comedy Competition.   She is an Oregon resident for 4 years - which she loves!

As an actor who has been on the stage since she was 12 her many years in theatre and film/tv have honed her skills to be the best of what she does. You can see her comedy chops in the Portland Indie Award-winning feature, Zilla and Zoe on VOD streaming. Her imdb.me/jeknell is a great place to see what the flavors she brings to her work. Julie just finished this summer another PDX indie with award-winning up and coming director Dawn Jones Redstone and a delightful short animated comedy #whatsyourpassword out next year.

Her number one Life Value = Passion.

Her Favorite Word ... Possibility.

Unique traits: Comedy chops, improv, singing belt, Texas borne, horseback riding, fiesty, think Laura Dern meets Jane Lynch via Annette Benning if Allison Janney had their baby. '-)
