SYNOPSIS:

The Travelin’ Singer by LaVerne Butler A professional singer travels and performs weekly through out the world, while she explores and experiences some of the most exciting cultures on earth! LaVerne begins at the airport (JFK/Newark) as she prepares to board her plane to Thailand for the vibrant city of Bangkok. After a smooth check-in, she takes her seat in coach class where she is handed a cool beverage by a friendly attendant. LaVerne reclines her seat after take off and closes her eyes for most of the flight. Upon her arrival to Bangkok, LaVerne is greeted at the airport by a representative from the Lebua Hotel where she will be staying and performing. During her drive to the hotel, LaVerne employs the friendly Thai driver to be her personal transportation while she tours Bangkok. When she arrives at the hotel, LaVerne is quite weary from spending almost 24 hours in and out of airplanes and airports in route to Bangkok. So after a quick tour of her beautiful, one bedroom suite, she throws open the curtains and reveals the first view of Bangkok by night from the 24th floor. She says good night and turns in for a much needed sleep. This ends Act One. During her first morning in Bangkok, LaVerne explains how ‘jet lag’ has her up and down at all hours. She looks out her window and down at the bustling streets of the neighborhood. She spots a market. She quickly dresses in cool, comfortable, clothing and bolts out of the room, camera and tote in hand. On the streets, she rubs shoulders with enchanted tourists pausing at every point to photograph venders focused on preparing their daily products for sell. LaVerne takes her own photos with her flip video camera. She chats with a fruit and vegetable vender. After brief, friendly conversation, the vender sells LaVerne some beautiful, exotic fruit indigenous to Thailand. But instead of eating the fruit, LaVerne decides to head back to the hotel for a ‘ real breakfast’. 2. The Mozu Restaurant at Lebua Hotel offers an elaborate breakfast buffet which features a variety of food styles that satisfy an international palate. LaVerne is quickly escorted to a table for two. The scene closes with LaVerne at her table and surrounded by plates filled with a variety of delicious foods. She digs in. To digest her breakfast, she decides to take her viewers on a little tour of the hotel facilities beginning with the fitness center, where she demonstrates how to use one of the aerobic exercise machines, aided by one of the personal trainers at the center. LaVerne needs more gym time! Next stop, the hotel swimming pool where LaVerne stretches out on one of the comfortable lounge chairs under a shaded umbrella. Later she confesses that she cannot swim, so she wades in the cool water on the shallow end. Act Two ends back in LaVerne’s hotel room where she informs us that jet lag hits her, and she must take a short nap before meeting the Thai pianist. Act Three opens with LaVerne standing on the ‘cat walk’ in Breeze Bar located on the 52nd fl. The bar almost describes itself with its famous glass enclosed walkway which boosts a stunning view of Bangkok. Inside the bar, LaVerne awaits the arrival of her pianist while she samples one of the speciality drinks from the menu. Her pianist arrives. They meet and greet. The fact that he speaks very little English could present a problem later, but LaVerne is hopeful. Music is a universal language. She presents her sheet music and song list. They confer. Everything looks good, so far. They will have only a 45 minute opportunity to rehearse one hour prior to the actual performance! LaVerne tries not to worry. Instead, her pianist offers to take her on a night tour through Bangkok. The night tour features several of Bangkok’s most exciting entertainment spots patronized by both locals and tourists. One of those stops is the Calypso Cabaret featuring a colorful and musical extravaganza of elegantly costumed Thai males who look absolutely flawless in heels, sequins, and false eye lashes! The night also includes a performance by a traditional Thai band as well as chance to dance at a popular disc club. The last stop is Bangkok’s famous jazz club, Nui’s, which features some of Thailand’s finest jazz musicians. 3. Act Three ends back at Lebua Hotel. LaVerne sits in her comfortable queen size bed, books, magazines and writing pad surround her as she makes notes of her day’s adventures. She glances at the television program, but she explains how she must write a bit before turning in for the evening. Tomorrow is the last day in Bangkok and the day of her performance. The last day of LaVerne’s tour begins with the afternoon rehearsal at Sirocco and Sky Bar on the 62nd fl. LaVerne and her pianist are seated at a table. They anxiously await the arrival of the bass player and drummer who are en route to the hotel. It is now 4:30 pm, and they are late! LaVerne must rehearse with a new band for the first time, and she has only 45 minutes to run through two songs for an 8pm performance at Sirocco and Sky Bar. The pianist receives a call on his cell phone. It’s the drummer calling to say they are stuck in traffic! LaVerne worries she will not have the proper time to rehearse the songs. She becomes somewhat irritated. The hotel manager approaches her with concern. Will they have to cancel if there is not enough time? She cannot afford to cancel. Too much publicity has already been done. She has no other choice but to give a performance with solo piano, if necessary. She and pianist begin to work through a song. The situation does not please management or LaVerne. But the show must go on. It is now nearly 5pm. There is still a little window of time left to prepare before the restaurant begins to allow customers in, but time is uncomfortably short. LaVerne explains how Bangkok’s traffic issue is usually so bad, it is important to begin early if one wants to get to where they have to go in time. Finally. The bass player and drummer rush in. Incredibly, the pianists speaks to them for just a few minutes, shows them the sheet music, and they begin to play. LaVerne listens to their instrumental run- through of the sheet music. She and management breath a sigh of relief. The band sounds great! LaVerne and manager high-five and beam with satisfaction. The rehearsal ends successfully. LaVerne takes a dinner break before preparing for her performance. The sun has disappeared, and is replaced with a star-studded sky over the shimmering lights of Bangkok. At her table, LaVerne indulges in a mouth-watering entree from Scirocco’s Mediterranean menu. Afterwards, she bravely ventures unto Sky Bar which suspends mid-air above the 62nd floors of Lebua Hotel. 4. Back in her room, LaVerne hurriedly showers, applies her makeup and dresses for her performance, which now is only 30 minutes away. She’s ready and arrives back at Sirocco with her band prepared and waiting to play. The episode concludes with LaVerne inviting her viewers to join her next week at a new destination for a new adventure. She performs her song with the Thai band at Sicrocco against the magnificent backdrop of Bangkok by night 62 floors up! 813-20th Street Union City, NJ.07087 201-912-4018 l.b.playwright@gmail.com
