UNSUNG
By Lew Riley

GENRE: Music
LOGLINE: Can a teenager who sings like Billie Eilish overcome her paralyzing stage fright in this entertaining, enlightening screenplay that combines comedy, romance and contemporary music.

SYNOPSIS:

“Unsung" is a modern tale featuring teenager Lexi Carter and several other high school characters, and I do mean characters--the lingo used would please even Juno. Wonder where Cody Diablo is these days. Lexi seems typical for a girl her age, in that she has an arrogant older brother, Drew; a fashionista BFF, Gloria; and a single mom, Melissa, who happens to teach at Harmon High School, which Lexi and guitar-hero bro, Drew, both attend. Unlike her pals, though, Lexi has a world-class singing voice (thanks in part to her mom, who has pipes to kill for), but is plagued by stage fright that would make Adele's seem petty. However, when brother Drew assembles yet another garage band, including newcomer Glenn (who resembles Nick Jonas), Lexi is bent on losing her fear and replacing the band's prima donna singer, Emily (her bro's latest squeeze), whose pitchy voice would render even Simon Cowell speechless. Lexi's mom enlists the aid of the school's counselor, Rob, to help Lexi conquer her debilitating fear. In the process, bachelor Rob reveals a long-hidden fear as does Melissa, bringing them very close together, especially when Melissa's worry about developing breast cancer becomes reality. After 90 minutes of memorable events sure to make audiences laugh--and even cry--"Unsung" comes together like Swiss clockwork at the comic, romantic, dramatic Harmon High prom. I modestly envision “Unsung” as the next “Pitch Perfect,” though requiring but a fraction of the price tag of the multiple main actors and lavish sets used in “Pitch Perfect.” Plus, there’s a world of difference between dialogue and actions of high school and on-their-own college students. One other major perk of “Unsung” is that it pays homage to America’s first female superstar singer, Linda Ronstadt, the fetching 70s vocalist, who sang everything from rock to opera. Lexi and her mom discover they’re both Linda fans, and her mega-classic “You’re No Good” will cause older viewers to fondly reminisce while introducing younger viewers to Taylor Swift’s idol. Of course, it would be ideal to have 4-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish play Lexi, as they are the same age, and Billie just cancelled her tour because of COVID-19, so she would have the time to make the film--but it would probably take winning Powerball--at least!--to sign her.
