"Rescue!" An inspirational story of seamanship, bravery, endurance and endeavour. Synopsis Whitby, North Yorkshire, January 1881 After a fatal error during an attempted rescue in a January storm results in the death of ten seamen, the braver-award winning Henry Freeman, Captain of the Whitby lifeboat, has to face his own personal demons. Downcast and fearing the pointing of accusing fingers and wagging tongues he begins to doubt his own bravery and judgement. However as the winter storm continues to batter and to cut off his town, news reaches him of another ship in trouble, this time down the coast at Robin Hoods Bay. Unable to launch his lifeboat due to the mountainous high seas Henry takes the momentous decision to transport the lifeboat by road, six miles over the moors and through the snow drifts to Robin Hoods bay where it can be launched safely. As the boat begins its treacherous journey on a carriage pulled by half a dozen horses, its route out of Whitby is cleared through the snow drifts by crew and townsfolk alike. Meanwhile when the news is heard at Robin Hoods Bay another team of diggers begin cutting through the eight-foot snow drifts to meet the boat halfway. Helped by over two hundred people and several teams of horses, townsfolk, farmers, and fisherfolk unite to undertake one of the most daring rescue attempts ever undertaken. "Rescue" is more than a story of a rescue at sea - it is the story of the heroics of a community, it is the story that made Britain's lifeboats and their crew the envy of the world.
