Laurel lives in Los Angeles, where she writes screenplays, rides her bike to the beach, for beer with friends, and crawls around the Santa Monica mountains a few times a week.
She is a 2012 Nicholl Fellowship finalist and as a result, Oscar agreed to have his picture taken with her. He's heavy and really short. She had a blast with fellow filmmaker friends, including the amazing and indomitable Jen Marlowe (donkeysaddle.org) in Oaxaca, Mexico, at the 2011 Oaxaca International Film Festival, speaking on a panel about screenwriting and representing one of her award-winning scripts.
Her work has been screened at several film festivals including New Filmmakers New York, Other Venice Film Festival, Garden State Film Festival, Dam Shorts, and the Park City Film Music Festival, among others. Her short film, Maria in the Kitchen, co-directed with Nik Perleros, won the Abbot Award for Best Short Film at the 2010 Other Venice Film Festival in Los Angeles (www.mariainthekitchenmovie.com). It's currently being broadcast in Reel NW, on KCTS Channel 9, the PBS station for Western Washington and South Western Canada.
She is the recipient of a Samuel Goldwyn screenwriting award as well as an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation/Tribeca screenwriting award. Her first full length theatrical play, Bone Deep, earned a 2001 4Culture Special Projects Award.
Laurel teaches screenwriting and filmmaking for several organizations, colleges and Universities including Relativity School, Stanford University On-Line Writers Studio, Young Storytellers Foundation, Seattle Central College, and Bellevue College. She adjudicates screenplays for the Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting, the WGAW awards, and the UCLA Professional Programs Nate Wilson Award. She has been a featured presenter at the Women on Writing conference in Northern California, and serves as a script consultant and mentor to award winning screenwriters.
