After unleashing monsters from cursed books, six teenagers must fight to survive a night locked in the shifting aisles of a labyrinthine haunted library.
SYNOPSIS:
Six teenagers—Holly, Mason, Chanda, Roman, Sung-jin, and Lex—don’t know each other or why they were invited to an “illicit lock-in” at the haunted Veritell Library, but they catch the last Library tour, sneak into the stacks, and are indeed locked in. Unsure what to do, they search for a rare book that the tour guide assured them would be on display: Lord William, a Victorian novel about a serial killer that may have inspired Jack the Ripper. Even though the Library is a shifting maze, they finally find it in a glass case. They want to know whether the killer Lord William, like the Ripper, escapes capture. They already know that they all have histories as “bad kids,” so they don’t resist when Holly breaks into the glass case. Sung-jin reads the book’s ending aloud, and the killer appears. Lord William slashes Sung-jin’s arms and disappears.
The group flees deeper into the maze, and the Library separates them into pairs. After a chase, Holly sees Mason become trapped in a storage room, where Lord William brutally murders him. Meanwhile, Roman and Sung-jin follow a ramp down to an emergency exit impossibly buried beneath the ocean. Chanda and Lex go after another book Lex knows about, The Banshee, which the Veritells wrote to combat the curse that makes their family die young. Hoping the book will help, Chanda reads its ending. The Banshee appears, scares them, and they run.
The five survivors regroup, and Lex tells them about another book, Void, about a creature that could devour Lord William. Roman has had enough of books and of Lex, but Holly leads them to a room where they read the end of Void, unleashing a glowing cloud creature. Again, they run. The Banshee shrieks a warning, but Lord William ambushes them anyway. He kills Chanda. The four retreat. Roman gets pinned between Lord William and the Void. The Void sucks him in.
The three survivors run, with Lex leading them toward one last book. In a room like a chapel, Lex reads from Wrath of God, which is supposed to cleanse monsters but instead summons an army of demons that pursues them to the storage room where Mason died. Amused, Lex admits he is Alexander Veritell, and he has taken them through these horrors so their deaths will offset the family curse. Demons, the Void, the Banshee, and Lord William converge on the room. Lex tries to offer Holly to Lord William, but Holly and Sung-jin resist, offering Lex instead. Lord William eviscerates Lex. The Void takes them both, and white light floods the Library, cleansing the demons. Holly and Sung-jin head to the stacks’ entrance. The door opens, and they see the tour guide, who knew about Alexander Veritell all along. Because they are “bad kids,” no one will believe them, and the Library will right itself. Disgusted with Veritells, libraries, and books in general, Holly and Sung-jin exit, flipping off the tour guide as they go.
