MOTHER'S MARRIAGE
By William Zwart

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

A family member's wedding is usually a cause for celebration, but for Tracy Brandy, it is anything but, as the union of her mother and step-father threatens to capsize under a wave of  squabbling siblings, ill-mannered in-laws, and long-concealed resentment.

SYNOPSIS:

Act 1

California. Ten-year-old Tracy Brandy is attending a theme park with her father, where she first develops a fear of roller coasters. Her mother is notably absent. The next day at school, Tracy seems preoccupied; quiet. She is even sent to the principal's office for displaying attitude. Later, upon arriving home, Tracy's reasoning is revealed. She pads into the house, past her bickering siblings, and peeks into the dining room, where the lawyers are attempting to calm their squabbling clients: her parents. After triggering a new barrage of shouting, Tracy flees up to her room. A montage follows of Tracy's perspective of the divorce.

15 years later. Colorado. The now-adult Tracy is at a put-put golf course with friends Stan, Dave, and roommate Ashley. Through the conversation, we learn that Tracy is attending Colorado State, is a cinephile, single, and did not return home for Christmas vacation.

Next afternoon at CSU, Tracy is in the library when she is given several misdelivered letters from home. Upon opening them, we see they bear bad news. Later, when Ashley returns to their dorm, she finds Tracy asleep and one letter on the table. It is from Janice, Tracy's mom, who cruelly berates her daughter for some unknown reason. Tracy awakens, and after showing Ashley the other letters, explains that Janice is getting re-married, and that she will likely cut Tracy off if she refuses attendance or causes any kind of fuss.

The next morning, Ashley helps her pack and drives her to the airport. Just before departure, Ashley gifts her friend with a small diary in which she might vent her feelings.

Act 2

Tracy arrives at the hotel to be greeted by nary a soul. While an inquiry of the staff turns up negative, answers come with Tim Buck, her sister Joan's boyfriend, who was ditched that morning when the entire brood, on Janice's whim, re-located to the groom's lake house. Joan later arrives to pick up Tim, and by extension, Tracy.

At the lake house, we meet the rest of the brood. Some, like the groom, Robert Swigg, are friendly enough. Others, like Tracy's brother Jake, not so much. Finally, there's Janice, mistress of wenches!

During dinner, Janice announces that they will be visiting Robert's theme park tomorrow, and heading to the rehearsal dinner afterward. Later, while being shown the bridesmaid's dresses, Tracy learns that Janice is likely marrying Robert for his money. This, combined with other straws handed out during the day, give Tracy plenty of ammo for her diary.

Forced to share a bedroom with Jake, Tracy flees his snores and into the livng room, where she finds Tim, who was also unwilling to share a bedroom. The two begin to bond.

Next morning, Tracy, encouraged by Tim, teaches her little cousin a lesson by shoving her in the lake. The little snot locks herself in Tracy's room, so she and her mother remain behind, as does Mrs. Swigg and her grand-nephew. The other eight guests pile into one car and head off. Meanwhile, Patsy, still locked in the bedroom, discovers Tracy's diary.

Upon arrival at the park, Tracy is nearly forced onto a roller coaster, but with the encouragement of Tim, stands up to her mother for the first time. Robert calms the tension by agreeing to stay behind as well, and proves to be blind to Janice's wiles. Tracy almost tells him about her family, but can't quite bring it out.

At the rehearsal dinner, the group is reunited. During her toast, Joan derides her father, claiming Robert has replaced him, which leads to Tracy causing a slight but painful accident in petty revenge. Joan heads to the bathroom, and Tim follows, meaning to console her, but she harshly turns him away. Returning to the main room, Tim sees Tracy sitting at the table...and begins to re-think his romantic choices. He catches her eye, and they sit together, easily slipping into conversion. Here, we learn that Tim dislikes Joan, but hates being single, and Tracy could afford her own tuition, but keeps her family aboard for her father's sake. Meanwhile, Patsy shows Joan the diary.

When they head back inside for dinner, Tracy finds she is receiving dirty looks from most of the guests, and catches conniving expressions from both Joan and Patsy. Eventually, she leaves, returning to the beach house, but must remain outside due to lack of keys. When the rest of the party return, Tracy gets at the truth from the groom's mother. Patsy, Joan, but especially Janice had spread a lie that she was having an affair with a married professor back in Colorado. Discovering the disappearance of the diary, Tracy is then confronted by her mother, and they exchange harsh words.

Fed up and packed up, Tracy heads downstairs just in time to learn that Tim also intends to ditch, having broken up with Joan. He suggests they ditch the whole mess, but Tracy has a better idea.

Act 3

The day of the wedding! Tracy and Tim have vanished, so the wedding party heads off to the hotel, and upon arrival, Janice immediately turns on Bridezilla!

Eventually, the guests begin to arrive, and who should come with them but Tim and Tracy! Tim has donned a sharp black suit while Tracy sports a smoking red gown! Despite this show, Tracy assures her mother and sister that she does not intend to do anything inappropriate.

The ceremony begins, after a few minor disturbances on which Janice is quick to pounce, they come to the vows. Janice, Joan, and several others stare directly at Tracy, but it is the groom's mother who loudly objects! Tracy is next, and this kicks off a gorgeous row! Tracy ducks out with Tim, but not before reconciling a bit with Jake. Colorado. Three months later, Tracy is now working at the put-put course. Through conversation with Ashley, we learn that Robert broke off the wedding, and Tracy's tuition is now her own. Later that day, Tim arrives and smoothly asks Tracy out. Film ends with their first kiss, and Tim assuring our protagonist that his mother is still married.
