The sailor who did not take care of it feels guilty, so he throws himself on board and disarms the cannon, for which he receives an order from the commander - a French soldier on the spot, but also an immediate death sentence for failing to do his duty.

The destruction on the sailing ship makes it impossible to sail, so the ship is caught up by a British squadron. On the seashore he meets a group of American soldiers/volunteers who were waiting for the French commander. The French sailor decides to pretend in front of them that he is who they were waiting for, because he sees the French ship sinking at sea.
