Sarah Carleton is an actress and creator living in Western, PA who balances her time between creating and developing new performance pieces, with finding opportunities to work with other artists and creators.
In 2009 she completed an MFA degree in performance from the University of Louisville, where she was able to focus on Shakespeare and multicultural theater, including studying in the University of Louisville's African American Theater Program.
Her work in film can be seen in collaboration with local filmmakers, specifically the Cleveland based Maple Films, with which she has worked with on several short films. Her work with Maple Films has included Transistor, for which she won Best Actress for the Cleveland 48HR Film Project in 2011, Undue Process, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress for the 2013 Cleveland 48HR Film Project, and Mind Over Manners for which she won Best Acting Ensemble with the rest of the cast for the 2014 Cleveland 48 HR Horror Film Project.
Some of Sarah's recent collaborations have included, several new performance pieces with soprano Lara Lynn Cottrill, which combines acting and opera. Their three original pieces have included, Shakespeare's Women, a showcase of Shakespeare's famous female characters, Song of Songs, a unique adaption of the Songs of Solomon, created by Sarah Carleton with musical selections chosen by Lara Lynn Cottrill, and The Heart of Shahrazad. Their most recent piece, The Heart of Shahrazad was inspired by the story of Shahrazad in One Thousand and One Nights and premiered in Pittsburgh, PA on August 13th, 2015 with two additional performances on the 14th and 15th. This piece was written by Sarah with music composed by Eliane Aberdam and performed by soprano - Lara Lynn Cottrill, harpist - Marissa Knaub, and actress Sarah Carleton, creating a unique performance exploring a one woman's personal journey of healing in the midst of violence.
