About Cameron

Cameron Menzies has directed for Opera, Music Theatre and Theatre, having worked with Opera Australia, Victorian Opera, The Opera Studio Melbourne, Malthouse Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company, Australian National Academy of Music, Oper Köln and the Deutsche Oper, Berlin.

Cameron is the recipient of the 2011 Berlin New Music Opera Award from Opera Foundation Australia and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, the 2008 Bayreuth Opera Award from Opera Foundation Australia; The Besen Family Artist Program (Direction), Malthouse Theatre and currently holds the position of Artistic Director for Opera in the Park for City of Stonnington and is the Director of Opera at The Opera Studio, Melbourne. Cameron has lectured in Stagecraft at the Victorian College of the Arts since 2007 and is also a member of the Opera Panel for the prestigious Green Room Awards.

First trained in acting under the renowned Hayes Gordon OAM, obtained his (BMus) from the Victorian College of the Arts, and has received the Australian Opera Committee scholarship, the Amy Alice McDonald Scholarship, Opus 50 and Scholarships from the Victorian and New South Wales Wagner Socities.

2012 saw Cameron directed the new Australian opera CONTACT! – A Netball Opera for the Arts Centre Melbourne and Regional Tour, La Cenerentola for Victorian Opera, The Magic Flute for Schools Company OZOpera, Opera Australia, Assistant Direct Le Nozze di Figaro for Victorian Opera, associate director on Pecan Summer (The first Indigenous Aboriginal Opera composed by Deborah Cheetham) , State Theatre in Perth, and director of Redfern for Short Black Opera Company for OPERA XS at the Malthouse Theatre, Eugene Onegin at The Opera Studio Melbourne at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Philip Glass’ Juniper Tree at the Opera Studio Melbourne. Assistant director for Nederlands Opera production of Michel van der Aa’s Afterlife for the Melbourne International Arts Festival 2o12.

In 2013 Cameron will make his European Debut at the Baltic Opera in Gdansk, Poland where he will direct the world premiere workshop of Romeo and Julia in Krakow composed by New York Composer Richard Einhorn. Cameron will also direct El gato con botas by Xavier Montsalvatge and the world premiere of The Magic Pudding based on Australian Artist Norman Lyndsey for Victorian Opera. He will direct Wonderful World of Operetta for Malcolm Cooke and Associates and Jules Massenets Cendrillon and Benjamin Brittens Curlew River for The Opera Studio Melbourne. He will also direct and style Operette for Linda Britten Couture Gowns for the L’Oreal Fashion Week – Melbourne Fashion Festival 2013.
