By Raj Sangha

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

An epic, interwoven re-telling of the legend of Faust, set against the backdrop of geo-politics, racial tensions, and counter-terrorism in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

SYNOPSIS:

We open on a monologue from GEORGE, a well-dressed English stockbroker, starting with archival footage of the 9/11 attacks paired with the financial markets tumbling. We then enter a flashback to show the infant George being swaddled by his drug-addled mother JANE, who worked as a prostitute before meeting George's dad MICHAEL, a police officer. Michael is then shown bringing in a mysterious, olive-skinned terrorist, who is secretly none other than LUCIFER, to face justice for his myriad crimes. The JUDGE sentences the man, who goes under the alias of "Frank Bricken," to fifteen years in prison. From behind bars, Lucifer orders his terrorist HENCHMEN to kill Jane as retribution for Michael's actions. She dies, dropping her cherished journal to the floor not far from baby George.

In present day, we meet IMRAN, a young, impressionable Pakistani man who's recently been inducted into a terror cell training overseas. He is met at the airport by his domineering UNCLE, who helps direct the cell, as well as NIWAB and JIWAD, two comrades in arms. We then catch up with Michael, who has become an MI5 agent, and meets with INFORMANT who gives him information about the IBBC bank extra legally buying missiles from China and advanced guidance systems from the company of MP MATTHEWS, a corrupt politician. The informant explains that this venture is ultimately about controlling the debt created by armed conflict in the Middle East. As the informant walks off, however, he's sneakily injected with poison by an ASSASSIN, killing him instantly.

GEORGE W. BUSH speaks with his aide JACK, during which it is made clear that the war is ultimately being guided in pursuit of oil to offset the operations costs. At Kings College, MP Matthews naïve and unassertive son JONAS listens to a drab lecturer drone on in his political science class. Later, in his dorm room, he smokes a joint with his spirited stoner friend JAKE, during which it becomes clear that Jonas is bigoted towards Muslims. He feels that their ideology breeds terrorists destined to blow up Western civilization. He wants to make a stand against Islam, but doesn't quite know how to do so.

Jiwad drops Imran off at his house, and Uncle makes clear that an upcoming peace rally is to be their target for an attack. In the house, Imran is greeted by his angry MOTHER and his wife YASMIN, who tries her best to understand him. On a train platform, a pickpocket named CHARLES steals a nice watch from a passenger, then heads over to George, who's doing key bumps of cocaine. Charles manages to sell George the pilfered watch.

We next meet JAMIE, an ambitious journalist who gets a call from his tipster Charles, telling him that a certain member of Parliament, as well as a SAUDI PRINCE, are war profiteers. George heads to his brokerage firm where he meets with his colleague NORMAN, who inquires about an acquisition document for MR. ALPHA, a mid-level oil miner. At 10 Downing Street, PM TONY BLAIR meets with his slippery foreign minister JAMES, during which we learn Mr. Alpha's drilling permit in Iraq has been revoked as the government has secured a better contract. Blair asks James about what he makes of the war, and alludes to the fact that James is a sex- fuelled coke addict. James says the British must fight hard, then leaves for an orgy.

At said sex romp, ROSLIN, a high priced escort, gets called by George -- he wishes to see

her after work. She agrees, but then James enters and takes Roslin out to a high-class dinner. Meanwhile, in Kings College library, Jonas studies with his friends THOMAS and FREDDY, reading a history book on Saddam Hussein. He's come to see religion as a tool used to manipulate the populace -- and Islam being the worst offender of all. When he mentions the idea of fighting back, Freddy tells him of a secret brotherhood within the university, but says he must first prove his hatred of Muslims to enter.

James and Roslin are out to dinner with the Saudi Prince and MR. BROWN, a banker. As they dine, Jamie slips into the restaurant and records their conversation with a remote microphone. There, he learns that Brown is helping to float the Saudi Prince via an IPO run by the IBBC on the London stock exchange, and catches them on tape discussing the upcoming arms deal.

Michael receives a call from Jamie, asking him to meet up. Meanwhile, George sees Mr. Alpha in his office, where he's told that Alpha is headed to Parliament to get assurances that his mining contract is on the books. They head out together, where George meets with Roslin. Then, they make passionate love. Mr. Alpha is crushed to learn that his contract has been reneged upon by the British government and nearly assaults James, only to be dragged away by security. Jamie meets with Michael and plays him the tapes he recorded of Brown, James and the Prince, piquing his interest in the tipster Charles.

George is summoned by his "father" Lucifer's henchmen to come see him. Yasmin tries to get Imran to see the flaws in his hate for the West, but he states he's willing to die for the cause of Jihad. George meets with Lucifer at his estate, whereupon Lucifer tries to persuade him to settle down with the right girl, suggesting he meet a certain MP's daughter, but George refuses. Seeing that George is itching for a fix, Lucifer gives him a baggie of heroin.

Jonas attends a lecture from his new professor, RAFIQ, a stately Muslim man, who speaks about the ethics required to support the modern business world. Jonas pipes up and begins mocking Rafiq for his Islamic beliefs. He opines that Islam breeds extremism, prompting Rafiq to ask him to leave. Jonas then makes a crack about Rafiq blowing up the classroom before storming out. In the hallway, Jake approaches Jonas, impressed by his outburst. Rafiq comes out and confronts Jonas, assigning him to a guidance counsellor. Though Jonas protests, Rafiq tells him that if he refuses, he won't be allowed to graduate.

Michael meets up with ROSE a street-walker friend of his, who says she can't kick her addiction and warning him that Lucifer is running crime in the area. Michael asks her to arrange a meeting with Lucifer. Jonas smokes a joint with Freddie in his dorm room. Freddie broaches the idea of "fighting fire with fire," and alludes to the great British tradition of men like Winston Churchill and the Duke of Wellington. He proposes an initiation ritual to get Jonas into the secret society on campus -- Freemasons.

Rose leads George to an orgy, but they get separated. Then, he's introduced to Lucifer, who tells him he has twenty seconds to save Rose. He rushes to a back room where he finds her with a noose around her neck and she hangs herself in front of him. Jonas meets with his guidance counsellor LEANNE, who tries to teach him the error of his close-minded ways. However, Jonas has no interest and claims progressives like her remain blinded by faith.

George shoots up heroin, falling deeper under its sway. Charles returns to his Crack Den home to tend to his birth-defected son GABRIEL. He speaks to two CRACK HEADS and wishes he had the money to take his son to America for a pivotal surgery. Michael meets with SAYEED, a Muslim MI5 agent, who tags along with him as they go to the crack den to find Charles. Michael tries to relate to Charles's struggles by telling him that he too has a son, and that he doesn't know where he is. Just then, the crackheads arrive and attack. Sayeed has his neck snapped, while Michael is on the verge of having his throat sliced. Charles shoots the crackhead dead, saving Michael's life. Michael tells Charles to run and assures him that he will take care of Gabriel.

PAOLO, a cocky CIA agent on loan to MI5, scours the scene while Michael checks back in with his SARGENT. The Sargent asks him to take some time off to recover. At the IBBC offices, Mr. Brown meets with the CEO DORIAN and his to discuss the government deal involving the missile guidance system. These dealings will garner the IBBC control over the oil market. Freddie takes Jonas to a desolate hall in the bowels of the university, where he find himself surrounded by chanting Freemason acolytes. After a cryptic ritual, he is born anew and inducted into the masons' ranks.

At a charity gala, MP Matthews meets with Lucifer, who introduces him to George. There, George encounters VIV, Matthews' spunky and beautiful daughter, who charms him with her straightforward honesty. She gives him her number. The next day, James conducts a deal with a US CORPORAL involving tons of heroin -- it's clear the military and criminal syndicates are operating in tandem. Paolo visits a recovering Michael and infers that Sayeed had a pen drive on him with confidential information about every agent in London. Michael then teams with Paolo to take Lucifer down.

Jonas sees Leanne again who gets to the root of his troubles: the "large shoes" he has to fill in walking after his prominent father's footsteps. Michael goes to the Social Services office to try and gain aid for Gabriel, to no avail. Roslin turns up at a café to meet George, who's reading his mother's journal. He knows his biological father was a cop, but nothing more. At the Peace Rally, things have turned violent. Imran is there with Niwab and Jiwad to carry out their nefarious plan. But Imran spots a lost WHITE BOY amidst the chaos, having been separated from his dad. Struck with his conscience, Imran goes to try and help the boy, but before he can Niwab detonate his suicide vests whilst Jiwad's fails, however, wiping the kid out along with many other bystanders. Lucifer talks with an unseen figure, who's revealed to be the Sargent -- secretly on his payroll. He orders Sargent to get rid of Matthews. Jamie witnesses their meeting. Racked with shame, Imran turns himself in to the authorities. Michael and Paolo learn of Lucifer's plans to take out Matthews.

Jonas calls Matthews on the phone to chat. He tells his father he's struggling to find his voice and that he's lost, but Matthews unemotionally refuses to engage. He tells his son that there are major expectations placed upon him that he is expected to live up to. George goes to see Lucifer and asks him about his true father, but Lucifer refuses to tell him anything. Matthews and his wife ESMERALDA go to speak with a troubled Viv, who's still hung up on her love for George. Michael and Paolo then turn up to warn Matthews about Lucifer, but he refuses to speak to them.

Thirty masonic members, Jonas among them, congregate in Freddie's dorm room where he delivers a fiery speech about leading a revolt against Islam, moving forward into a brighter future without their backwards ways. Freddie tells the gathered crowd that they must fight, using brute force to reach their demands. He hands Jonas a list of chemical compounds needed to make an explosive device, which they plan to detonate at the Green Street Mosque in advance of an all-out attack. Though he's torn, Jonas eventually

agrees to go along with the plan.

Back at MI5, the pen drive material has been extricated by a TECH, unveiling that the payoffs are being orchestrated by "Frank Bricken," the man Michael arrested twenty years prior. His company is also involved with Matthews. George goes to see Lucifer with Roslin. Meanwhile, Paolo sneaks into Matthews' home during a soiree and sneaks into his study to hack his computer while Charles shows up outside to distract security. Paolo gets evidence of the link between Matthews' company and the IBBC.

Viv approaches Michael and they start chatting. George notices this and he grows upset. They start chatting and George spots that Michael is actually a cop. Mr. Alpha shows up and tells George that the political agendas run deep. Shaken up, he goes to leave, but Viv goes after him and they go to smoke a joint together. Lucifer threatens Roslin, warning her not to see his son again. Viv and George go to drive off, only for a car bomb to detonate, killing Viv instantly while George rolls to safety. Michael approaches Lucifer and places him under arrest. George is devastated by the loss of Viv. In the aftermath of his daughter's death, Matthews withdraws from the deal with the IBBC, leaving Dorian and co. in the lurch. Michael questions Matthews and manages to get information about Bricken's connections out of him, but the corrupt Sargent tasks a SHADY OFFICER with taking care of their problem. Michael then interrogates Lucifer, who reveals that he knows the location of Michael's long lost son. Meanwhile, Mr. Alpha snaps, driving through the gates of 10 Downing Street and murdering James.

Matthews meets with George and gives him a paper with reference numbers of secret IBBC account payments, asking him to destroy the document. Lucifer meets with Sargent and tasks him with bringing in Charles. At Viv's funeral, Matthews speaks with Jonas, who excoriates his father for not being there for them. He blames the inept UK government for not being able to protect them from terroristic acts, then swears that he'll strike back since Matthews' ilk is incapable of doing so.

George takes Matthews aside and tells him they must make things right to rectify all his corruption has wrought. Lucifer clocks this, then meets with Charles. Lucifer threatens Charles with his son's death if he doesn't take out someone for him. At an abandoned warehouse, Jonas returns with the explosive components, and we see that the space is loaded with other weapons. Michael and Paolo confront Sargent with evidence of his corruption, which he vehemently denies.

Matthews is being kept in protective custody at a safe-house, but is guarded by Shady Cop, who he tells about the files he gave to George. However, once the Cop leaves, Matthews is poisoned to death by his own Wife, who was pushed to do so by Lucifer's network. Sargent then places a call to none other than Paolo, who we learn is now, in fact, in on the nefarious plot with him. As Michael seeks justice while George seeks the truth about himself, Lucifer and his agents aim to snuff them out. Freddie, Jonas and the others pull up outside the mosque, where, inside, Jiwad is praying for his second chance in life. Jonas plants the bomb and detonates it, then storms the place of worship with his gun drawn. Will the attack be thwarted in time, or will Jonas' spiral into moral corruption reach a bloody end? Will the forces of light prevail, or will the wages of institutional corruption drawn parallel once again go unpunished at the highest levels of power?
