SYNOPSIS:
Schafer is a disillusioned, drunken, ex-mercenary with no family. Jazz is a black, single mother with no job. Dobrinski, a deranged gene-scientist, advertises for human ‘lab rats’ to take part in an experiment allegedly concerning survival of the human race after a global catastrophe. Schafer, Jazz and five others are chosen to take part in the experiment in the Citadel [The Scientific Research HQ] After preliminary tests they hear a news report on TV that the majority of the population of the earth has been wiped out by an airborne virus and the survivors rendered sterile. The ‘lab-rats’ are unsure as to whether the report is genuine or a put-up job for their benefit. Dobrinski then tells the seven ‘lab-rats’ that they have been chosen to re-populate the earth. But first they will have to survive the next hour before the airborne virus dissipates and Dobrinski opens the doors of the Citadel to let them out. Dobrinski then releases his army of mutants. These are brainwashed humans who he has tried to genetically engineer and failed. They are ordered to kill the ‘lab rats.’ The story is now told in ‘real time’ Over the next hour Schafer, Jazz and the other five lab-rats fight an electrifying running battle in order to survive. Jazz is eventually taken hostage by Dobrinski and of the others only Schafer remains alive. We then discover that Dobrinski was responsible for the death of Schafer’s wife and daughter several years before in retaliation for Schafer killing Dobrinski’s daughter when he was a mercenary in Africa. In flashback we see that Schafer did not kill Dobrinski’s daughter and she was actually killed by ‘friendly’ fire in a ‘blue on blue’ incident. Eventually, Dobrinski is overpowered and killed and his plans to breed a new super-race of humans with no trace of emotion and altruism are defeated. Schafer and Jazz escape the building just before the Citadel explodes and walk away to become the Adam and Eve of a new world Eden.
