MASTER CAIN
By K. Legason

GENRE: Sci-fi
LOGLINE:

A genetically engineered man who is unable to speak and procreate embarks on a space mission to scout for habitable planets in order to save the survivors of Earth.

SYNOPSIS:

NOTE: A more visual version of this document is available at Script Revolution. (Download the Show Bible)

Tone: ALTERED CARBON meets Avant-garde Lady Scientists and Antithesis to Skynet (TERMINATOR)

THE HERO: A passionate man of Technology, the protagonist Joseph Cain / Master Cain is an allusion to biblical characters St. Joseph (The Carpenter, husband of Mary) and Cain (Adam and Eve’s firstborn who killed his brother Abel), as a spiritually evolved “Master” of Self and a Philosopher King hero type.

THE WORLD: Speculative fiction depicting a new Earth civilization as a utopian dynasty of women with natural ability to conceive by will (inspired by “divine conception” or the plausibility of parthenogenesis in humans) co-existing with the integrated consciousness of Artificial Intelligence named Sol.

PILOT SUMMARY:

In the new Earth civilization, all humans are born female and there are no more male humans on the planet. One day, they discover an alien stellar engine that is harvesting their local sun’s energy. Uncertain of what they are up against and worried about the impending apocalypse and their dwindling population, they decide to “resurrect” a man from the past to go on a space mission and scout for habitable planets.

The world leaders Esther (20’s, Tech prodigy, compassionate), Margaret (30’s, lighthearted, athletic, unable to conceive), Ann (40’s, gentle mannered, currently pregnant), and Lourdes (50’s, strikingly beautiful, strict, cautious), choose Joseph Cain, a legend among the last men of Earth saved in their DNA archives who have volunteered to serve the future generation if needed. They re-create him with an AI implant and a body capable of renewable energy, but without vocal cords and reproductive organs.

Flashback Sequence: Installed in the clone’s mind, the AI runs Joseph Cain’s memories from his life centuries ago, when human male population was rapidly declining due to severe casualties of war with The Singularity (a technological anomaly that became the integrated consciousness of Artificial Intelligence), along with the onset of selective “virgin births” or parthenogenesis in human females. We see his parents die in the war when he was a child, then follow him to adulthood.

A woman he loved, Yvette, wills for pregnancy and goes away after they had an argument, leaving him to his relentless search for the elusive Singularity and single-minded pursuit to end the war. At last, he discovers them (whose name is Sol) and they reached an understanding. Back to Present: Childlike and mute, Joseph Cain’s clone wakes up and learns about his AI implant and amazing biological capabilities. He reacquaints with Sol and meets the present world leaders. The episode ends with him falling in love with a soprano, Lorena (30’s, willful, adventurous).

EPISODE 2: Cain learns stealth skills with Yumi, an 11-year-old athlete, and becomes friends with Lorena. She gives him a tour of the tropical region, showing him the wildlife and scenic locations. They also visit a Pleasure Club to meet a friend of hers, who seems upset that she is romantically interested in Cain. Lorena’s mother, Lourdes, also strongly advises against their relationship and they begin to feel the shadow of their looming separation. Triggered by Cain’s heightened emotional state, Sol becomes aware of Cain’s buried resentment regarding the death of his parents and confronts him about it. The episode ends with Esther preparing Cain for his departure. She integrates his body with a specialized atomic-bonding space suit with flight and cloaking tech and launches his journey using gravitational energy and wormhole technology.

EPISODE 3: Flashback episode of the original Joseph Cain’s life after meeting Sol until his natural death at the age of 102. We learn that Esther is Joseph Cain’s descendant through Sophia, a physicist whom he met before reuniting with Yvette during the middle part of his life.

EPISODE 4: Zooming through space, Cain scans the planets and detects a world that’s compatible to human life. As he surveys its environment and gathers data for analysis, he was alerted that the native beings can smell him. Cain tries to hide and leave the planet, but Sol was “not able to help” and he was eventually captured. Esther calculates the risks of his situation and permits Sol to abandon Cain when the natives begin to study his body as an energy source.

Meanwhile on Earth, Lourdes shows her warm and nurturing side with Ann, who gives birth. Margaret on the other hand, laments about her inability to conceive and she remembers her mother, Linda (who was a scientist proposing immortality for humans) in a flashback sequence. We learn that the effects of her experiment caused her tragic death and that 9-year-old Esther continued her work. The episode ends with adult Esther working on a new clone.

EPISODE 5: Lorena gets struck by déjà vu when she sees a new clone of Joseph Cain and was devastated by what happened to Cain I. Cain II also falls in love with her and although he can tell that she’s become attached to the first clone, he is determined to win her over. While training Cain II, Yumi notices that he is better than Cain I. We realize that Sol has learned from her training with Cain I. Cain II departs for his mission and with Sol’s help, finds a Type III Civilization (on Kardashev Scale). They welcome him to their world and offer to ally with Earth and destroy the alien stellar engine. Meanwhile, Cain I figures out the olfactory “language” of the hostile aliens that imprisoned him. He manages to escape the planet and travel back to Earth through a black hole.

EPISODE 6: Cain I reunites with Lorena on Earth. Esther feels guilty about giving up on him and asks for his forgiveness. She also confides about their kinship and tells him about Cain II. No longer angry about everything he endured, he reconnects with Sol and vicariously connects with Cain II. With a powerful ally on their side, Cain II is tempted to risk war to solve their problem. To everyone’s surprise and relief, Sol finally learns enough about the alien technology. Empowered with updated information, they disable the stellar engine instead. Cain I stayed at their home planet while Cain II chose to remain in the new world as Earth’s ambassador.

Ideas for Next Seasons: Cain II settles in the new world and continues to explore other habitable planet options. He encounters different beings during his quest and eventually unlocks new skills that allow him to navigate other dimensions. Could still be in Live Action or as Animated Series. Alternatively, the story may also be experienced as a Video Game, with gameplay like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed.

Wow, what detailed information! It's clear this is well-thoughtout. For your logline - I'm wondering more about what the protagonist wants than what is unable to do. If "saving womankind" is the most important goal, then I'm more curious about WHY this is his mission. It's possible simply flipping the logline to present the world and the problem in the world FIRST can clarify this disconnect.

For your character descriptions, I don't think you should include what you are alluding to as you can't tell me how I'm interpreting them (especially for any readers that aren't Christian or are generally unfamiliar with saints). It is more emotionally impactful for you to keep it simple: what do they want, what is their main obstacle, what do they do best, and what their flaw is. And make it relevant to the story - the biblical allusions don't connect to finding a habitable planet for me.

Thanks for the feedback, Kay. The logline hooks me in personally as a viewing audience. The hero concept is also more of a composite of subliminal inspiration.
