LOSS
By Craig McLearie

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

When a man loses his memory, he has to trust those around him to give him insights into the life he once led. But his instinct tells him that what they're telling him isn't true...

SYNOPSIS:

Loss is the story of a man who suffers an incident and loses his memory. He wakes up in the hospital not knowing who he is, nor the woman sitting next to him. The man is a stranger in his own life, unable to trust his own memories, nor the words of those around him. He struggles to find his place in this new environment; being intimate with a woman he should know inside and out, a home he doesn't feel comfortable in, a job he has to re-learn how to do...

After a rehabilitation period, when he is finally coming to terms with his station in life, he tries to discover who he was, but it's not easy when no one likes to talk about the past. This man without a name longs to revisit a place equally as beautiful as it is poisonous, London. He is drawn to it because he feels like it will unlock the secrets buried in his own head, but there's something else... a feeling deep inside that he doesn't belong where people tell him he should belong, rather that "home" is somewhere else. Little does he know that some secrets should remain buried.

The film is a slow and brooding exploration of what makes us who we are if our memories are compromised; it is ultimately an exploration of IDENTITY. Who are we if not for our memories?! And what does "home" mean to those who feel like they are always searching for it...

The themes of loss are speckled throughout; our main character feels isolated, like he's trapped in limbo, and he doesn't know how he got to this point. He doesn't know it but there is pain in his past that has changed him, broken him down only for him to find his foothold again.

Stylistically it is sombre, deliberately evasive, and has sparse dialogue so we can experience his isolation with him.
