THE UNSPOKEN
By Scott Marcano

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE: A female detective with the history of suicidal tendencies must slay her own demons to follow horrific clues that lead to torture, murder and The Catholic Church cover up in a monastic insane asylum.

SYNOPSIS:

Detective Katie O’Donnell – a troubled homicide detective recovering from a nervous breakdown is forced to face her inner demons, when she’s assigned to solve a suspicious ritualistic suicide. The case resembles Katie’s past failed attempt at suicide and deaths in her family. Katie would rather avoid the case, but when the DA (who’s the uncle of the victim) personally asks her to become involved - she has no choice. Wading through clues with her loyal partner, recovering alcoholic Mark Moynihan, Katie discovers that the suicide is really a murder and the victim was pregnant when she was killed. A trail of clues leads Katie and Mark to Danbury, an insane asylum run by the Catholic Church, where the victim recently stayed. At Danbury, Katie discovers that many female patients have become mysteriously pregnant. Katie suspects that there’s a conspiracy involving the staff at Danbury, but she’s blocked by the Abbot, Father Kegan, and the Archbishop of Boston – who want to keep the church out of a scandal. Both lean on Katie’s boss and demand that the investigation be stopped. When Katie refuses to back down, she is almost murdered while trying to gather evidence. Katie forges on, risking her life and career. She convinces Mark to break into Danbury at night and look over the Abbot’s personal files – where she discovers that a seemingly friendly monk, Brother Michael, has been transferred to Boston because he was implicated rapping girls in France. But Katie and Mark are captured by Brother Michael and taken into his lair deep in the secret tunnels below Danbury. There, Brother Michael confesses everything. Brother Michael admits that he’s been raping the patients, believing that he is the “seed” that is supposed to father the reborn Christ. Katie manages to get away from Brother Michael before he kills her. She corners Michael in the passageways, but he kills himself rather than being captured. Katie is exonerated for her bravery in solving the case, but in a bittersweet ending, Father Kegan and the Archbishop cover up their roles in the conspiracy. Katie, however, has proven herself to the chief, and finds solace in finally confronting her past traumas
