SYNOPSIS:

A young boy, SKYLAR, finds a gold coin on a beach after a hurricane roars through a Caribbean island. MAD JACK, an old mountaineer who has come to the island to relax and drink away the memories of his climbing partners who died on the world's highest peaks, befriends the boy and together they embark on a search for a sunken Spanish galleon. The boy feels isolated on the island and wants adventure; the old man has had enough adventure and just wants peace and quiet. Skylar’s father leaves the island to return to the United States to say farewell to his own father who's dying. The dying man was involved in a financial scam that put him in prison and so embarrassed the family that they fled to the island, and they don't have the money to return to the financial circles or attain the social status they once had. Mad Jack has no family of his own and takes on Skylar almost as a son while the boy's father is away. Skylar and Mad Jack run into resistance from a fisherman who doesn't want them exploring a reef where he dumped the body of a woman whom both men loved. The fisherman is afraid the crime will be discovered. After the boy and the old man find a sunken galleon and sand carpeted with gold coins, a sudden squall hits them and Skylar is knocked overboard. Mad Jack pulls him to safety at great risk to himself but can’t prevent his boat from crashing onto the rocks. Mad Jack is gone, devastating Skylar who realizes losing a friend is more important than finding treasure. Late at night, after the storm has passed, Mad Jack, battered and bruised, suddenly appears at Skylar’s doorstep, having survived the raging water, and is welcomed back into Skylar’s family as if he were a long-lost relative.
